To clarify why you need to go in person, there are millions of people trying to scam the Social Security system. When a case has already been assigned to a representative, making a phone call to another SS representative will make your case even less of a priority and less likely to be resolved.

Funny, I thought they were on the corner just before Wolfy's.

I signed up for SS online, easy peasy. We had to call the local society security office up north to sign my wife up so she could get the higher of her earned benefit or 50% of mine, which couldn’t be done online. The receptionist scheduled a phone consultation a couple days later and an extremely helpful representative called us promptly as scheduled and took care of everything very quickly and easily. Perhaps the Social Security office serving the Villages is somewhat overwhelmed by the extremely high percentage of senior citizens living in the area. I guess that can be added to the very short list of positives up north relative to the Villages. Both the health care systems and social security offices aren’t overwhelmed by the extremely large percentage of senior citizens?

Last year, I signed up to receive my spouse benefit that became available as a result of the new Social Security Fairness Act. The SS representative assigned to my case was located in Birmingham, Alabama. All transactions were handled by phone and email. They accepted scanned electronic copies of all legal documents, with no need to provide originals. However, I did need to visit the Leesburg office once to provide a physical copy of my driver's license to prove that I was a live person.

Go to the office in Leesburg. They are very helpful there. Make sure you bring all of the papers you need.
