Now in my current adulthood status I would say that if you take a sobriety test there is no way you will pass. I feel now that if you have to take that test you are all but already convicted. HOWEVER, as a young adult, leaving Hampton Beach NH, I was pulled over, took the field sobriety test and passed. I was drunk but not hammered, maybe 4 or 5 beers over 2.5 hours. The officer estimated me at 0.6 or something. But who knows, maybe it was my white priviledge.
I think it was more luck. Hampton Beach employs auxiliary/summer officers every season. NH State Police, reluctantly complements and supports the year round roster with officers. As do many abutting municipalities on a given summer evening. Even in the 80’s (sounds like your timeline), they had more important things going on than open containers and public drinking to address. Also in that era and in your case, officers had discretion and latitude. Now you have body worn and cruiser mounted cameras, much stricter DUI laws, penalties etc. On the bright side....and if it was one of those grey area arrests.....NH, like FL has very skilled DUI specific law firms. Many former LEO turned attorneys

Some! Don’t mean thousands

No, maybe they only had two. But officer didn’t ask how many joints, pills they popped, or what illegal drugs they’re on. Never seen so many pot heads in my life time as I seen in villages.

I am guessing you didn't live on a college campus in the 60s or 70s.

I agree. Some people should not drink. But depending on v i l l a g e s. N e w s for the information necessary to make such a judgment might be just a bit suspect.
You are right. Sometimes when I read about these DUIs, I consider that cops are hearing these supposedly honest Americans lying to them nearly all the time. Do they become jaded? Do they learn to assume that everyone lies to them? I assume that’s what happens, but it’s very sad. Imagine how they must carry that home with them. I pity them, and also their families. For me, putting up with lies like that would drive the joy out of life.

At .6 you would be dead think you meant .06 two hundredths below the current legal limit.

Right you are. The comment you are replying to made me raise an eyebrow & think wow, that would be something.

You’re correct. I once had a friend whose husband was a LEO. I recall her saying “you and I have no comprehension of the types of people my husband deals with every single day”. He was very stoic.

Well, he probably wasn't lying, but he neglected to tell the officer they were serving his beer in gallon buckets.

All you have to do is spend a little time at the square bars (or even at the entertainment on the squares) to see that some people should not drink at all. “You can’t stay young forever but you can be immature for the rest of your life”. Anonymous

Back in the day a couple close friends got into trouble at Hampton Beach for open containers of alcohol (beer cans). The cop looked at their licenses and told the other cop they were from North Hampton and the other cop said to let them go with a warning. The first cop said, they are from Northampton, MA, not New Hampshire, so they threw them in jail. It goes to show that it was all about raising revenue from outsiders. I had to empty my bank account and drive to New Hampshire to bail my buddies out. So much for New Hampshires state motto, “Live free or Die”.
