Maybe these wannabe buyers should be banned instead.

Perhaps you should post post exactly what happened in a case such as this and also post the person's name.
They would deserve it!

Honesty and integrity of sellers has been mentioned in this thread.
If the seller seems to lack in these qualities, what is wrong with mentioning their name?

Because the honesty and integrity of the seller has been challenged by only one person.
Besides, the seller as far as I know is not running a licensed business. Just your run of the
mill schmo selling used stuff on the internet.

Anyone who gives a deposit to a seller is nuts!
By law, a deposit must go into an escrow account. If the seller has an agent, the deposit goes into the broker's escrow account.

If the seller is a FSBO (For Sale By Owner), the buyer should have the deposit placed in an escrow account with a title company or attorney.

Have Sold many items in my lifetime. Rule of Thumb I use; Cash and Carry IMM....Otherwise, I will tell you that item is still available to the first person who has cash and will take away IMM. Will never tell someone I am selling to them at a later date of their convenience. True buyers always come first!

OK. If this is the worst thing that happens, you have had an excellent week.

We went to look at a car first guy got there before us, said he would buy, but no deposit. We had cash in hand, but seller said gave his word. Three days later seller contacted us first guy never came back. We already bought a different car. Seller yelled at us for not waiting on a car he said was sold.

Cash in hand takes care of it.

Yes, we are sure about this in the context of the discussion. The original poster was talking about purchasing a used item from this site's for sale section, NOT real estate. If you don't want to give a cash deposit, then be prepared to have all the cash in hand to purchase. Again, I am not referring to the purchase of real estate.

The seller has no obligation to hold something for buyer with no contract and hold forfeit money. I sold lots of stuff and just cause somebody says they want it don't mean they are committed. I always told somebody you x number hours to get or the next guy that want it gets it from lessons learn when dealing with tele callers. Even then, there no garrentee it will be there when you arrive.

I once found garden tractor with all attachment. Told the guy I would give what he was asking and it would take me 1 and half hours to get due to the bank wasn't open yet. Long story short I got the money drove the hour and when I got there within the hour and half time limit. He sold it and I seen the guy driving away with it for less money.

I asked him why he didn't wait for full price time he allowed me to get there. He said the guy had cash and no garrentee I was going to show up. This was back before cell phone and internet. I was alway gave the buyer time limit to get it. But 1 minute after the limit it was up for sale to first buyer with cash. I was ****ed, but nothing I could do except drive home with no tail between my legs.

Today with Craiglist you got to be fast or you loose out.
