Stories you would have missed if you just read the Villages Daily Sun
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/lak...ake/index.html
New blood at the POA-- "Gorman said the POA isn't just looking for a potential new president. VIllagers can get involved in a variety of leadership roles, from an officer to a director, depending on your interest. The POA wil hold an interest meeting next week for all those who want to learn more about the association, and what's involved and required as a leader. The meeting will be held Wed., Sept. 17 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Laurel Manor Recreation Center." |

Re: Stories you would have missed if you just read the Villages Daily Sun
Been there 3 times, did the lifestyle thing once, I love the hometown paper.
I call it the good times paper. I wish every town had at least one good times paper. With all the large papers leaning left, what's wrong with the developers bragging about all that is good here? I know there is more NEWS out there, If I want regional or national news there is plenty of places to go. If I want he died, or she killed someone, or they got robbed or raped, or there was an earthquake, or every problem in the world is Americas fault, There is plenty to be had. This is America if you see a need in tv start your own paper, If not let me have some good news while here in the bubble. Benj

But what does this have to do with "all the large papers leaning left"? Who ever said that "every problem in the world is America's fault" [my emphasis]? What does this have to do with the Daily Sun as our local community newspaper? And what if "he died, or she killed someone, or they got robbed or raped" takes place right here in our 'bubble'? Should our local paper report the reality within our community, or should it be only a 'they lived happily ever after' presentation? Am I missing something? Someone help me out, please--thanks! |

Maybe I should have said MOST of the large newspapers instead of all. The rest of what I said seems easy to read and fairly straight forward. My point is what you describe " I really enjoy the Daily Sun for what it is within our community". And yes there should be room for " they lived happily after presentation". The Daily Sun isnt HARD news , but If I want that there is plenty around. Thats all. As far as all the other stuff you mentioned thats all I read in most of the large newspapers. Please dont ask me what papers, I've read to many to remember but thats the drift I get.IMPO Benj

Re: Stories you would have missed if you just read the Villages Daily Sun
I do have to say that the Daily Sun is getting better in reporting world and local area issues. I read the Orlando Sentinel and the Daily Sun and there are days when the Daily Sun covers most everything that is needed to know in our area.

Re: Stories you would have missed if you just read the Villages Daily Sun
It just seemed to me to be such a huge leap from
'the Daily Sun our community newspaper' to 'all the big newspapers are left-leaning and blame everything that goes wrong in the world on America.' (I'm paraphrasing.) I just couldn't grasp the connection.... |

I mean no disrespect to anyone and maybe all the political posts have made me to touchy. I'm as old as many people in TV and I can remember when ABC, NBC, CBS and the newspapers were fair and balanced ( no pun intended). Now days I dont think so. In my mind there is no doubt that the vast majority of newspapers are left wing IMHO. Also I think that all they want to report is bad news and disasters and crisis. I think you cant even make the news by killing your neighbor, you have to kill them and eat them or worse to make the news. So when I read the Daily Sun and get a view skewed to GOOD news even though I know it is skewed I get a kick out of it. Remember my view is from 2500 miles away. So anyway when I see people complaining about the Daily Suns Good news bias, I laugh. Benj

Re: Stories you would have missed if you just read the Villages Daily Sun
Thank You Taltarzac,
This is valuable information. It is beginning to look like the Orlando Sentinel could be, along with The orginal residents Homeowner Association The POA, be a champion of Villagers rights. |

Re: Stories you would have missed if you just read the Villages Daily Sun
Benj, I meant no disrespect either and appreciate your clarifying that. I just didn't understand how the point that Tal made--that here's a story from the Orlando Sentinel (what might be called our regional newspaper), that potentially does affect us here in TV, that didn't appear in the Daily Sun--useful info, IMHO--became in your mind something about major newspapers being left-leaning. I don't believe Tal intended this to be a political post; if he had, it would have been in the Political Forum and likely I would never have read it! The Daily Sun is what it is, and I don't think anyone is criticizing that. I guess I could be wrong....

Re: Stories you would have missed if you just read the Villages Daily Sun
There are two things that should be considered here.
1. The Villages Daily Sun is in existance to "sell houses. That was told to me by the head of the media department. 2. The Villages Daily Sun is one of the only newpapers in the United States that is gaining readship and not losing it. That information was contained in a story written by Associated Press and carried in newspapers nationwide. |

I agree about the "yellow journalism" and the inflammatory reporting. It sells papers and air time and destroys my sleep. I obsess about a mother killing her infant in a microwave, who wouldn't. The Daily Sun is owned by the Morse family who are Republicans and the Orlando Sentinel is owned by a Democrat entity. If you know these basics, it helps to sort the two out.

If one wants to live completely Pollyanna style, then read only the Daily Sun. If one wants to see the 'warts,' then read only the Orlando Sentinel. And for those who want the "fair and balanced" picture that Benj mentioned in his post, then read both! |
