Angry Sumter County SPCA

As you probably know the SPCA sent out a request for donations of food for the animals in the county because of the hard times many families are dealing with. I dropped off a donation of dog food & bisquits at the sheriff's substation on 466. The volunteers there said thanks, but they could really care less if the animals in the county were starving. It wasn't their problem and who cares! I absolutely could not believe it. I asked one of them if he ever had a dog and he said yes, but he still didn't care if the animals were starving. Where on earth did they find these guys??

LDJ1938,

Thankyou so much for your contibution to the animals. I dont know if its a case of really not caring. It seems like most people are so overworked and underpaid that they hardly focus on the kindnesses of others.

I have volunteered at an animal shelter for a gazillion years and I must admit when people bring in donations of food or other things, the staff barely can muster up a thankyou. I dont know why this is other then they are so distracted by the amount of responsibilities they have and cant be bothered. I often thought its a shame that more appreciation is not shown, but ya know what, you have every right to feel great about your donation because those hungry animals will really appreciate your kindness and that is really the important thing here.

Wow, I didn't know that. I'll donate for sure. Where did they ask the donation be dropped off at? At the sheriff's station or at the SPCA office??

You can also drop off at Grateful Dog in Lake Sumter Landing which is where we made our donation. The gal there was super in helping select some food for dogs and for cats. Sumter County Humane then picks up there....you can help Grateful Dog as well as the Humane Society !

If it were me, I would for sure get some names and let somebody know that "volunteers" are expressing such stupid comments..to me that kind of behaviour is unacceptable ! I am assuming they are "volunteers" for the Humane Society which makes no sense but I am sure the Humane Society would love to know who they are and perhaps their "volunteer" service is not required.

Thanks Bucco. I love that store. I presume you can buy the food there too? I didn't know that. Every time I go in there, I buy more collars and leashes, now I have more of them than I do dogs...LOL..

They were volunteers at the Sheriff's substation. They didn't think the SPCA or the animals were worth the effort of feeding them. Sheriff's volunteers, not SPCA volunteers.
I think the sheriff should look for some new help!

Thumbs up Spca

http://www.hsspca.org/default.asp

That is a link to the SPCA website. In the future I will just send a check instead of buying food for the animals. I'm sure they can buy the dog/cat food without paying sales tax and know exactly what they need. I've visited their facility and do they do a wonderful job. Make a donation and get their newsletter. They are good people!

Default Sheriff Farmer

I know Sheriff Farmer personally and can assure you that the behavior you are speaking of would not be tolerated by him for one second by anyone representing the Sumter County Sheriff's Dept. He is the most giving caring person I have ever known and is always there to help anyone (and that includes animals) in need.

They do a great job there and why not do both....buy some food at Grateful Dog AND send a check. You help the SPCA AND the local economy !

By the way, having been involved with many of these organizations they are one that I can say has a more positive spin to their newsletter which is needed in my opinion.

If you want another great organizations check out Best Friends who are located in Utah but they are super...check out their website...http://www.bestfriends.org/

We are planning on dropping off a bag of cat food and a bag of dog food at the PAWS Animal Hospital in Laural Manor on Friday. There was an article in the paper about providing food to the Sumter Humane Society that mentioned that this was a drop off.

When my beloved Bart passed away, I gave a lot of his food and toys to the Country Oaks Veterinarian Clinic in Marion county.

We figure a bag or two a month will not hurt us and will help the animals that the humane society has to take care of.

When I donate to Food Banks in grocery stores, I always include some dog and cat food. During hard times, people are often forced to get rid of family pets, and that breaks my heart.

I can attest that the shelters are fuller then ever now . Times are tough and people are forced to give up their pets. Its a very sad situation. Please consider contributions to your local animal shelter. They really cant keep their heads above water without our help. Any donation no matter how small is a tremendous help.
