Can someone please tell me how to stop the smoke alarm from beeping. I thought it was the battery that needed replacing but when took the cover off I found that it was hard-wired and there was no battery to replace, at least none that I could see. Since it was hard-wired, I was afraid to touch anything, so I just put the cover back on.

I have heard that the Fire Department will change your smoke alarm batteries for you here in The Villages. Only charge for batteries. Call them and ask.

As I recall, the hardwired smoke alarms have a battery backup. Take a closer look, you should find a battery in the unit. If one is beeping, you should replace ALL of the batteries in all of the detectors.

It might have gone bad. Just unplug it. It happened to one of mine and was replaced by the manufacturer since it was under 5 years old. otherwise Ace hardware sells them.

Some are defective call the company give them model number and they send a new one

If you remove the unit from the wall plate by turning it you will find a 9 volt battery in the back. Good luck.

Smoke alarms need to be changed out every 10 years.
I believe the new law says they need to be battery back up also.

All of these alarms do have a 9 volt battery. It is located in at swing out door / access in the outside edge of the unit. If it goes bad, your alarm will chirp until it is replaced and the unit reset by pushing the test/reset button on the front of unit. It is a good idea to replace all of the batteries is one is bad as odds are they are all the same age.

You also have a "master" alarm. It is the only one that is both a smoke and CO2 alarm. It is typically centrally located in the kitchen / living room area. These alarms have a "life" and just go bad. They typically need to be replaced somewhere in the 10 year range. Replacements can be found many places ..... HOWEVER, it is somewhat hard to find them that have the same wiring connection needed to do a simple plug&play. All TV Ace Hardware do have replacements that just plug in and their price is actually competitive.

My house is not even two years old yet, so the smoke alarms should not have gone bad so soon. I'll check again to see if I can find a battery in there. Would it still be a 9-volt battery? Do I have to unplug the cover to look in it? How do I find the model/serial no?

Call the fire department, the smoke alarm battery change and smoke alarm test is a service they provide free of charge to Village residents. I have two numbers, 205-8280 and 352-569-1011. One of these gets you right into the fire station and one gets you to a very nice lady who will handle your call.

The very first time our smoke alarm started beeping was in the dead of night and we could not stop it. First thing in the morning two young people from the fire department came, changed all the batteries - you have to provide new batteries, and then tested the system and we did have one bad smoke alarm. They suggested my husband buy a new unit and they came back and installed it and tested the system again.

There is no charge for this service, but we always take something edible round to the fire station during the day and I know many other people do too.

My home is 8 years old and growing. I replaced the CO2 alarm twice and the smoke alarms once so far. If an alarm is chirping it i either the battery or time to replace the entire unit because the chirping will signal either of these causes
