Seriously people??? Come on. There are a thousand places i can think of and TV doesn't even rate a second look. ISIS and other terrorist are looking for headlines and running over a bunch of seniors wouldn't even warrant a news crew. Maybe the announcement the next day on TV's radio station would say "it wasn't a great day in TV but there's always tomorrow."

We are very, very vulnerable-remember a terror attack happened in Orlando- 1 hour away
WHy couldn't the Villages be completely gated like The Top of The world Community...they should have done this from the beginning of time. EVen if they allowed outsiders to the squares, etc. they would have a record of everyone driving through. THis is something that should be seriously discussed with the Morse family.

The protective decorative planters at the squares sound like a decent idea. Not too many would be needed.

Now, this is NOT for protection against terrorists driving onto the crowded squares. It would be MUCH MUCH more likely that a person parking by the square would accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

For one thing, a completely gated community means you own all the streets within the gates and have to pay for all upkeep. With the miles and miles of streets behind gates in The Villages, that would mean much higher monthly fees.

OR............maybe they could just discontinue Village Square entertainment so that no one could be run over, shot or stabbed. Wow! The terrorists have already won their battle by scaring you all. That is the whole point of terrorism is to a put fear into their enemy so that we become a police state.

Don't expect someone else to protect you. Take control of your own life and do whatever you feel safe doing.

My parents lived from 1983 to 1998 in a completely gated community, Timber Pines in Spring Hill Florida about 60 miles southwest of here on the Gulf coast. No one enters without a sticker on their car and if you're visiting someone they must leave word at the gate for them to be let in, or the gate attendants will call your home to seek approval and if no answer, they don't enter.

The difference is Timber Pines is 2.3 square miles with two gates, and the second gate wasn't added until the community was established about 15 years. The 2010 population of Timber Pines was 5,400. As you can see the population and square miles of TV dwarfs this smaller community. The biggest difference is they have no retail businesses inside the walls of Timber Pines. Can you imagine the restaurants and retail stores at our squares and rec center and golf course employees getting to their jobs, not to mention all the contractors whether landscaping or home improvement getting clearance into TV. It would be a monumental task and would have to be handled like a large military base, essentially 1 or 2 main gates for everyone to enter and exit.

I think Wiotte is right.

About what? First, although I don't think this thread is ridiculous, I don't personally feel that the odds of attack merit any of the proposed solutions, at least, not at this particular time (who knows what the future may hold). As far as his second statement regarding paranoia not being normal, by its very definition, his statement is superfluous. But, most importantly, to link paranoia to persons who conceal carry and call them "absolutely nuts" is not even worthy of an intelligent retort to such delusional thinking! He should be so lucky as to never need the courage and foresight of a permit holder when his life may be in peril!

Lastly, what some folks view as paranoia, some others view as situational awareness, a skill set which could keep one around longer to enjoy the fruits of one's labor ... just sayin'
Well, I hope some day when the unthinkable happens around you, and a person with a conceal carry stops that unthinkable event, you take a moment to praise him/her for saving you or your loved ones life.

We are the people that you want around when the "crap hits the fan" (unless you have your own personal bodyguard).

I for one think we are towards the bottom of the target chain. We can't stop "crazy" crap from happening in this world and if we start barricading ourselves up like cowards, then they have won to a point without lifting a finger. I agree there are FAR more places that would get more attention. Maybe we better not have landscapers, they could be up to something... Maybe we better not have golf carts anymore, they could run them over easily... Maybe we better shutter the Churches and Synagogues, cause there are real targets... Maybe shut down the golf courses... They might be mined... Maybe you better not go on any trips or cruises, cause that's scared....Enjoy what time you have left here on earth, go enjoy what TV has to offer, (isn't that why you moved here in the first place) and go to happy hour and if you see a policeman in town, thank them. You can't control the world.

Also, I have seen signs prohibiting trucks at the squares. A truck would stick out like a sore thumb.
So they criminal takes one of the spots early, then jumps the curb and kills 50 people and injures 70.

I doubt if the Squares would be the target of someone who studies them and then carefully plans and executes an attack. Probably someone going off the deep end and is in that area at that time. All those parked cars and multiple gold carts per spot would act as a metal barrier.

It could happen. It would have to be a pickup, not one of the larger trucks favored by terrorists. The larger truck would come to the attention of the police.

I do think it is extremely unlikely. I'm pragmatic; there are thousands of things that could happen. I weigh the odds and go on with life.

I am pretty sure that neither the Developer nor the vast majority of the residents wants The Villages gated. How can I say this? If the Developer wanted The Villages to be gated he would have created a gated community. If the residents wanted to live in a gated community they would have bought in a gated community. Regardless, it could never happen retroactively for a variety of logistical, financial, and legal reasons. Everyone who bought here knew, or should have known, that The Villages is not a gated community. If you really want to live in a gated community there a lot of them around. I have lived in a gated community and the grass is always greener on the other side ;-)
