I have observed in Europe that turn signals for (automobile) roundabout exiting is relatively common. They have had roundabouts longer and in more places compared to most places in the US. Such roundabout signaling in The Villages is good — but if only I could trust drivers to use it properly. I can’t for now.

Now we just need to educate the drivers how to use a roundabout. There are so many people here that can’t read or understand the signs on how to navigate the roundabout. Making the 1st right being on the inside lane, making a 3rd right being on the outside lane. What is wrong with these people?

I have to wonder how many drivers actually took Driver's Education. When I did---we were told to make signaling a habit. and to always/always pay attention around us. The vehical on our right has the right of way. Many folks living here came from large metro cities and brought bad habits with them.

The roundabout at the intersection of El Camino Real and Buena Vista always has a lot of traffic but is particularly bad during snowbird season. Even now, still a couple of months from peak season, it is crowded. It is nothing to see lines of traffic stopped as drivers wait to enter. I've seen drivers accelerate as fast as they can to squeak onto the roundabout a whisker in front of oncoming traffic, cars in the righthand lane move to the left-hand lane and then abruptly exiting from the left lane right in front of the car they just passed, things like that. About a week ago I saw a lady actually stop in a roundabout and back up to take the exit she had just overshot. Fortunately there were no cars near her at the time, but it could have been bad. One of the reasons I sold my bike after moving here is because you're literally taking your life in your hands if you ride during high-traffic times, particularly in the roundabouts. I had more close calls here in TV in the month or so that I did ride than I had probably in the previous ten years in Minnesota. |

I always felt there should be signs at the roundabouts that read in big letters “SHOW YOUR INTENTIONS “

I have two rules for myself when driving and especially in the traffic circles.
1 - Everyone is out to crash into me. 2 - Keep my head on a swivel for total situational awareness so I can spot that driver who is there to crash into me. |

You are welcome. I'm assuming I'm the only one who does that so it must have been me you saw!

So now people have decided to make up their own rules which they can follow, I won't. Nothing wrong with going thru side by side as long as both cars obey the actual rules, not made up ones. If that car in the right lane next to me decides to go left, they will get a ticket and maybe a letter from Dan Newlin. Trucks are a different story and might need more room to maneuver.

How much do you trust that driver next to you?????? And they might get a ticket, while you might get a funeral---but you'd be dead right |

If I'm coming in from the left-most lane into a roundabout I always signal just before exiting the roundabout. Otherwise people just coming in as I'm about to exit don't know that they need to not speed up. Even though I already have the right of way, I'd rather not have "Here likes OBB - she had the right of way" on my gravestone.

I've been a full-timer for ten years and I've learned not to trust turn signals. Not only do people forget they are on, but occasionally they turn in the opposite direction as the signal indicates. Then add to the mix the dreaded snowbird factor, and you have a recipe for disaster.
