Thumbs down Unhappy with TOTV

Personally I'm surprised and unhappy that threads are being closed and not allowed to develop. I enjoy the give and take of threads and feel that shutting down a thread because someone is sarcastiic or a comment is not all sweetness and light is shortsighted. In all the years I've been on TOTV
I'm now unsure if this message will see the light of day.

I personally think some posts run their course and disintegrate into other than the post topic. I check in on these posts and instead of finding anything associated with the post, I find out that Joe lives in the same city as Beverly and John likes bagels from Maine, etc. Nothing to do with the original post! If posts would stay on the topic I can see them staying open. Once they get so far off of the topic, I think that they should be ended.

I also think that posts that have been around for a long time should be closed with a note in the closing that a new thread should be started if you want to reopen this topic.

Sometimes I open a post that I think is interesting and find out that it is a very old post. After going to the end, I see that a poster has responded to something that was resolved six to eight months ago.

Just my opinion.

I agree, Z, on all points, especially the off-topic conversations. While they are fun for a few posts, it completely confuses or doesn't answer the originator's comment or question. I agree they should be closed at that point, or the topic cop should try to get it back on track.

Aw, give the new administration a break. It is still early in their ownership. I'm sure things will even out.

I thought Russ Boston's post, on why he was leaving TOTV, was shut down way too quickly by the admin. Russ' comment "Things have just gotten too personal lately" was entirely appropriate and completely true, and then his statement was confirmed by some of the subsequent comments made on his post as they became personal! C'mon admins, why would you shut these kinds of posts down? Please explain. I think you should stop people from reprising four year old posts that only confuse people, but not current posts.

When post become personal as you noted above then the thread is subject to being closed. If a thread does not become personal then it would likely not be closed.

My 2-cents is to err on the side of leaving threads open. Perhaps Admin might post a gentle reminder to stay on topic if a few posts start veering the thread off course or delete offending posts.

Z
With all due respect, I disagree in part with Z. Sometimes going outside the box does have it's benefits. At times I have found interesting or useful information when things go off topic, including the making of new friends from my hometown or organizational involvements. I've also found some humor that's cheered me up when I've been down, and I'm sure that others must have experienced the same thing. When it goes too far astray or perputuates itself for too long, then that's where I would agree.

As for old posts, I consider them to usually be an archive of knowledge. Just because one was active on TOTV when the original conversation was going on doesn't mean that they are the only ones who can benefit from it. Later on, new members can also benefit from the knowledge that might exist there. I know that's been the case for me at least!

Having said all that, I will say that I've experienced some of what's being discussed with a degree of the same feelings, but at the same time I realize that this is not my personal forum and everyone is entitled to share the information, even into the future, dispite my personal feelings and unless comments are disrespectful, vindictive or mean't to undermine the creditability of one whose opinions disagrees with their own. But then, those situations would be the call of the Admin and not ours!

Sky, I agree that sometimes temporary hijacks add humor or warmth and make TOTV feel like family. As you said though, "When it goes too far astray or perputuates itself for too long," it obstructs the thread.
