I agree as well. We all enjoy the banter, back and forth, etc. as part of the group dynamics. But at times the banter overwhelms the original topic, and then I think it is the call of the Admin to shut things down. I'm sure too, since the Admins are new, they are feeling they're way in managing the board. Personally I felt the last Admins were too lax - they took too long to respond when problems arose, things got out of hand at times as far as lack of respect for certain posters. I don't think they monitored the threads as closely as they shoudl have. I personally have been pleased to see how things are shaping up lately, particularly the focus on respect for everyone's opinons.

Default Wannabe

As a" NewBe" Lets be careful about the frequently thrown around word-

"Wannabe" you sound like look like act like statements!

As a NewBe if I was to call someone in my classroom a Wannbe! Well here in Rural Farm Country it could be fighting words to some of these kids.

That to them it refers to a White person trying to act like a Black person.

Take it for what it's worth that Wannabe statement could be hurtful to a new comer to this site.

Just a thought hope the bricks don't start getting throw this way.

Peace!

Agree with Taj and good comment from hforward. You can never please everyone. I think the new Admin is doing a super job.

wan·na·be also wan·na·bee(wThe Villages FloridanThe Villages FloridaThe Villages Florida-bThe Villages FloridaThe Villages Florida, wônThe Villages Florida-) Informal
n. 1. One who aspires to a role or position.
2. One who imitates the behavior, customs, or dress of an admired person or group.
3. A product designed to imitate the qualities or characteristics of something.

adj. Wishing or aspiring to be; would-be.

In all my years this is the first time I ever heard a politically-correct aspect to the term wannabe. As can be seen in the above definitions, these are all positive statements that describes the usage of the word wannabe. Without throwing bricks and with all due respect, I don't see why a regional abuse of the term should preclude it's usage outside the region where it is abused. Just saying!

C'mon admins, why would you shut these kinds of posts down? Please explain. I think you should stop people from reprising four year old posts that only confuse people, but not current posts.
We have heard nothing from them. That is a little scary. Let me restate it again ADMIN. Come forward and let us know what you expect or what changes are happening. With these things getting out of hand, someone might start another site? Its not hard, nor expensive. Oh, no now I might be deleted too...... COME ON! That's been done. Another site was started and it didn't last.

As a matter of fact, at least 4 other sites were started and none made it. I'm seeing many wonderful posts and threads here. Good source for info. Can't please everybody.

If Party 1 calls Party 2 a name or makes a comment that a reasonable person would consider to be inappropriate, that is out of bounds and should be stopped by the admins. I think the admins have done a good job of this over the past three years I've been reading posts on TOTV. But in the situation where there was a little bit of heat in the thread about Russ Boston's departure, I really didn't see anything all that inappropriate. I think Russ probably expected some heat - and I think it was great that a couple of the posters, inadvertently for sure, helped confirm the argument Russ was making. But stopping the thread was a mistake, IMHO.

Let me add that I don't subscribed to the title of this thread. I'm NOT unhappy with TOTV - And I think the admins have always done a reasonably good job.

We replied above in post #11 regarding this.

As we have posted numerous times over the past couple of weeks our primary concern is to maintain respect for each member on the site and to protect the sponsors who pay to support the site. If a thread or post becomes negatively directed at a member this would be of concern. There are over 100,000 visitors a month to this site and almost 18,000 registered members. We will never get it right 100% of the time or would it be realistic for us to expect that we can satisfy 100% of the users. We would rather error on the side of maintaining respect for each other and each others opinions than not.

I hope this post helps. If you have questions that we can further answer or assist with feel free to PM or send me an email to talkofthevillages@gmail.com.

Rather than close a thread, I would prefer that you delete the offensive post and notify that poster why you believe the post was inappropriate. If the poster continues offensive posting, take away his posting priviliges.

TOTV is similar to FACEBOOK

I just like to linger.

If ADMIN wants to quelch something - so be it

It's still interesting to linger!

When I'm with a group of people and a touchy subject somes up I try to change the subject - "why can't we all be friends"

Good point I had an active and popular thread going once and someone made a negative comment about a post someone else had made on my thread. The post and whole thread was deleted because of a comment someone else made to someone else's post. My thread should have been kept alive. I even received a few PM's asking me what happened to the thread.

I respect your opinion. And 20 years ago I would agree with you 100% .Good point and I see it from your side of the fence,

I don't do political correct unless it's demanded like in my job. I had a slip up one day and said that . Don't want to go back to that day ever again. I needed a helmet and seat belt on to hold myself in the black chair from the days getting ripped apart by HR. That said!

Most of us are in a profession that now a days requires PC and demands respect. I don't seem to remember that was the case in boot camp?

It is easy to assume I'm singing coom by yaaa in rocking in the corner thinking political correctness about Wanna be.

Nope the real challenge is try standing it in front of a 6 ft 250 lb Farm Kid who does not give a darn about political correct.

You just called him a WannaBe and you have about two secounds to think fast and save your life! Ahhhh most kids do not always references a dictionary. They are txting Mom Dad and the Social network of friends on the way to get the translation they want.

Believe me when I say on this site it may be Ok and a freedom of speech just don't try that in front of 25 12 grade students.

Thanks for the no bricks. You guys are all fun to debate with.

Now back to packing boxes to move. I soooooooooo wannabe at the Village now! LOL
