Went into Chase Bank where we were told that the check was void since we scratched out on it.....it was in the name of the account holder and wanting to cash her own check. I was told years ago by a bank, that if a check is made out to you with your name misspelled, you should sign it as your name is written on the check, then sign your correct signature below it and present your ID with the check. I have used this method several times and never had a problem cashing the check, especially at my own bank.

That would not have happened at Wells Fargo Bank as you would still be waiting in line to cash it. That is one worthless bank.

If you make a mistake on a check you put one line through it and initial it. If it is you taking money out of your own account you ask for a counter withdrawal and don’t need a check or use your atm. If the check is from someone else then you are out of luck making changes.

By the way when I first went to college and got my own account for checking, the very first check I forgot to sign on the front and I cashed it anyway without even looking.!!! So we don't have rocket scientists working at Banks

One thing that is not clear about this thread is that the OP didn't say who scratched out 3 letters on the check. If it was someone other than the account owner, it would clearly be a forged and defective check, and should not be cashed.

Default Untrained teller

You cannot scratch something out on a legal document. A check is a legal document. What if someone stole your check, scratched your name out and put theirs in it's place. Do you want them to be able to cash it? Of course not. That is what happened here. You cannot change the name on the check. It is no longer legal or cashable. The teller did the right thing,

Doesn't matter if they won't cash it they won't - I once wrote eighteen hundred instead of one thousand ... they wouldn't take it

Forgive me but is sounds fishy to me. "Wanted to cash her own check." If, "she was there, she could simply tear up that check and write another one. It is not Chase, an altered check is void. "Cash a check," if the check was deposited into the account, they would hold the funds until the check cleared.

I'll never forget the time our tax collector changed an amount on a residents check by a dollar or two. He got away with it!

No , its been altered, same with the amount. if they gave you a hard time about it , be thankful they are watching out for your best interest.
