TOTV is an invaluable source of useful information and helpful (or not) opinions. I just sat through a very high pressure sales pitch for a Clear Choice Water Purification system and couldn't help but think back many years to a Kirby vacuum presentation I suffered through. Because I'm not wild about the taste of chlorinated water, I have a Brita-type pitcher we fill from the kitchen sink, and we have the GE fridge filter for icecubes. If I am to believe the hocus pocus presentation, our current methods are wothless. For 30 years in Annapolis, we were on fabulous tasting, but very hard, well water, which we had to soften in order to preserve the plumbing/appliances. Since we moved here, I've followed with interest the comments about the NOVA system. At this point, I'm curious about the pros and cons of either. There are apparently 4000+ happy Clear Choice customers in TV (not an overwhelming number, considering the total population). Why should I buy either system, or shouldn't I bother to buy either?

We were unhappy with the taste of the water when we got here. We got tired of changing the fridge filter every couple months, and they're not cheap. We saw the info on the Nova system and decided to try that. We've had it for over two years and replaced the filters twice, at a cost less than we would have spent on fridge filters alone. Now we have great tasting water from all our faucets, not just the fridge. I think one of the factors that caused us to change fridge filters so frequently was that we used fridge water whenever and wherever we could. A side benefit is that, if you look at pictures posted of the filters when they are removed, you can see the orange stuff collected. We had to replace all the tile in our master shower before we got the Nova filter because the grout was stained orange and none of the tile cleaning companies could get it clean again. Now we don't have to worry about the guest shower doing the same.

We had a water softener prior to the Nova system and we were a little concerned about removing the softener which had died and going with just the Nova system. But we have no problems with bathing, washing clothes or dishes. Nice lather. But no slippery feeling when showering.

I can't comment on the other company, but it seems we got what we were looking for at a much lower cost with Nova.

Thanks, I did, and I've written down their phone #. We have no sediment in the toilet tanks, no discoloration of tile or grout, and not much calcification of the shower head or other fixtures. I was more concerned about excessive chlorine and any other toxic pollutants that might be in the water.

I am a real fan of Bob & his NOVA system, which we have had now for just over three years.

We had the usual high pressure sales talks from a couple of companies when we moved to TV.

Then we met our neighbour Bob at a 'gathering', he and his son Brad are real experts in water quality as they have a chain of Pet Stores somewhere in Long Island, specialising in selling exotic fish so not only are they experts on water quality, they have extensive knowledge of water filter systems too.

You will not get high pressure selling of them, just the truth about their product.

At least compare ours to theirs, an educated home owner about water chemistry is our best customer.

We have more capacity/specs and lower prices.

Our Whole house filter removes 99.9% of the chlorine and pollutants, I have an independent lab test to substantiate that.

One point on chlorine removal, it is not just chlorine you need removed. If you look at you annual report from the water company there are two by products listed there as well.

Haloacetic acid & TTHM, both are by-products of disinfection process equally as carcinogenic as the chlorine.

We don't use the standard charcoal based carbon our removes those by-products as well.

Most softeners just softeners just soften they don't filter.

Our company is not simply equipment installers like our competitors, I have been doing water chemistry for for over 40 years, with delicate marine aquaria.

You can add me to the list of happy/satisfied Nova customers. When we moved in, as soon as I opened the tap, I was overwhelmed (perhaps a slight exaggeration but not by much) with the odor of chlorine. We had Nova come in and install their system. I no longer smell the chlorine and an added benefit is that since it is a "whole house" system, it is removing the chlorine from the showers. After swimming in chlorine, I don't need more chlorine on my body when I shower after a day in the pool.

Very satisfied with Nova and highly recommend.

Everyone else uses charcoal or activated charcoal, some use KVH inside a softener.

In the case of KVH those are about the size of a can of soda and are placed inside some brands of softeners. It is hard to tell when they need replacing ans because the water isn't pre-filtered before reaching that type of filter they clog up with particulate matter fast so they are not very effective. When they do need changing it requires a service call + a new KVH it gets expensive.

charcoal type carbon has been used for years but because the carbon chips are lose packed into some type of container water can bypass the carbon contact, due to this channeling of the water taking the path of least resistance. you wind up with perhaps 85-90% filtered water.

I have been using coconut shell carbon impregnated with special inhibitors. this carbon is compressed into block, so water can not bypass it. (almost like brick) the other advantage is it is natural, and has smaller pores to trap more contaminants.

Some the most delicate marine creatures thrive with this type of media in their aquarium filtration system.

It is about 3x the cost of other carbon.


Last point about my design, the carbon in the pic below is on the left you can see it's large, about 5" x 24"




Because of it's size the water within the chamber has more "dwell" time, a very important issue. The longer the water stays in the chamber the more contaminants it can remove.

That is the reason the small 2"X10" you may see at home depot etc are really ineffective.

We no longer buy bottled water, we just refill the empties from the tap after having Bob & Brad install the Nova system. IMHO this system should be standard equipment on all Villages homes.
