Default Water Retention Ponds

I bought a lovely home in the historic section of Silver Lake in September . I’m still very new here so here is my question . The rear of my home faces a lovely retention pond / reservoir with ducks swimming by and other wildlife ..In September the pond was pretty high , now the pond is quite low. Will the upcoming rains fill it again or how does that work ?

It's complicated, but the ponds in The Villages are connected by a piping system, that allows The Villages to prevent flooding by moving water from one pond to another. Also, if there is a lot of rain, they will sometimes turn on the irrigation system to reduce the water level in the ponds. Currently, there is a water shortage that could be reducing the amount of water in the ponds. Also, there is a Florida law that requires builders to construct retention ponds as needed to reduce water runoff, especially when their construction project includes a lot of paving that increases water runoff.

Does the water management system apply to the historic side?
I don’t think so…….

From AI:

"Water management in The Villages/Silver Lake area is handled by the North Sumter Utility (NSU) and Water Conservation Authority (VWCA), servicing thousands of homes with potable water and non-potable irrigation, overseen by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Water usage is strictly regulated, with conservation efforts focused on reclaimed water for irrigation and strict enforcement of watering schedules."

Summer rains usually replenish the retention ponds.

So, it’s not a part of The Villages storm management system.c

It is, but it isn't.

Much of the Historic and northern areas of TV were developed under an older (different) set of regulations and some under an entirely different development framework. I suspect there was also some "grandfathering" involved with some of the original Villages.

Not much different than the newer areas of TV, which I suspect have to adhere to stricter, newer regulations, under a different permitting authority.

Pretty sure the retention pond you're referring to is Paradise Lake, or the "pond" on the other side of the bank of the lake with that statue of the two little kids fishing (where Kim Lane meets Silver Oak Avenue at Boone Park). It's one of the few water areas in The Villages that's a natural fresh-water lake, and not a retention pond. It definitely dries up quite a bit from January to April, but the rains fill it back up again. Last year it rained so hard one day that the road flooded right at that corner, and had to be closed down and a segment of the road repaved.

It is used as a retention pond and managed as such (on the other side of it, near 441, you'll see the little man-made island with the waterfall - that's part of the water management system). But it's a natural body of water.

More AI misinformation.

Silver Lake area is north of 441 while NSU/VWCA is south of 466.

District 1, Spanish Springs, and the historic area are within the Village Center Service Area. (see Water Services on districtgov.org)

Still part of the Villages storm management system but not necessarily interconnected with any other areas within that system.

Can’t move water anywhere else in The Villages.

Some older District presentations mentioned maps/diagrams on the district website that showed basin interconnection. Unfortunately, the website was reformatted a couple years ago (after the presentations) and I have not been able to find those pages.

Perhaps someone can provide a link?
