Very early this morning a baby Cardinal died after crashing into the lanai window. The parent Cardinals have been keeping vigil over her and every now and then they try to revive her by pulling her leg or pecking her body. The male is aggressive in protecting the body and hours after it happened he will charge me if I step outside. I did check to see if the baby was indeed dead and sorry to say she is. I'm so impressed with the dedication of these two parent to protect their baby; they have remained within a few feet of her body for many hours.

Sadly, that is so true; makes me wonder if some of those really are human at all. Lovely story and "ditto" on the thanks to Duffysmom for sharing it.

My daughter witnessed a similar vigil in her front garden in Brooklyn last spring; the cardinal parents guarded the baby's body for nearly a week.
