With no bond, far enough that we're not TOO badly affected by hurricanes, and the availability of activities (whether we use them or not), our choice to live in this retirement community was the best, most affordable option when we made it 7 years ago.

If we were to make that decision today, based on the current market price of the home we moved FROM - I think we would've done better financially in Alabama or Kentucky somewhere.

Good point.
If you lived in the TV for 5 years or more, we are experienced and lived
in all the inflation on everything we buy.
So, to moved anywhere now just to save a couple bucks a month when be foolish.

Smaller 55+ communities have fewer pickleball courts, tennis courts, golf courses, clubs, etc. However, the amenities are shared by fewer people. I do not see much of a difference in the ratio. When the snowbirds are gone, it is similar to living in a private resort. Some have complete lawn maintenance, two fully equipped gyms, indoor Olympic size pool, and sauna. Truly gated, less traffic, fewer neighbors, and closer to a large city. If golf is not important to you, living in a smaller 55+ community does have perks.
