My problem is weeds in the beds. I tried Preen--did not work. Sprayed Round-UP on the stone areas--worked great but with all this rain they come back in a week or two. I'm thinking of removing the mulch in the beds around the sides & back of house & letting the grassy weeds grow & be cut by the mower. I might try that vinegar/dawn/epsom salts spray first.

I read that preen is used in the soil and acts as a pre emergent to stop the seeds from growing. You water it in and it forms a barrier. The fall is a good time for this to stop the spring growth of new weeds. I use a regular roundup weed spray in my beds and where I have a fence line.

Hubby also sprays roundup on our bed borders but you do have to be careful because the spray travels as you spray it and you may get a little more border than you asked for. Probably best not to do it on a windy day and keep the sprayer set for not a wide spray if doing borders.

Tom - That place seems to have lots of stuff. But I found this place that had the actual "Celsius" product that he mentioned in his post. Pretty pricey stuff, too! But the site had tons of all manner of products for just about every problem you might need to tend to, pest or weed. And, they're in the Atlanta area.

Preen only prevents.....does not kill existing weeds. I use it on my stones and apply it much heavier than package directions. Works great for us, but, again, you need to be generous with it.

Celcius is pricey but you use so little of it that one container would last all season. This is a professional chemical like the companies use. Most of the online products are what the pest control companies use. I use the ant and roach baits with no pest problems at all.

The "hardest" weed I have trouble killing is Torpedo Grass. It crawls underground (deep) and tunnels it's way through the lawn. I guess the only way to kill it, is to kill the lawn too?

Be very careful when pulling weeds. There is one type that is very prevalent here that has very small leaves and when you pull it, hundreds of little seeds spread out on the ground, creating more weeds. I was told by a landscaper to spray those type of weeds.

Just use a selective weed spray made to work on your type of grass.

I use the max force bait only because I have some from my previous job. Most of the gel baits are boric acid based, slow kill. They feed on it and contaminate their mates. Iit is actually the same as Combat in the stores. Same product. Terro and Dual Choice are two other name brands. The online sites sell them all.
