Every day we see on the local news the terrible atrocities committed by criminals and believe it won't affect us, but you can't even go to Walmart, Publix etc., today without some degenerate kook looking to harm someone for no apparent reason. There is no where safe today,so why not be prepared in case a serious situation happens. How sad is it that kids can not go to a party, a bar,a dance, even schools, whatever, without some sort of violence happening. When we were younger it never crossed our mind that a shooting would occur. Like I previously stated, the world as we knew growing up has change radically, and for the worse.
I suggest that a far better approach would be to dramatically reduce the number of guns in the USA. The research is clear - if you have a gun you or your family are much more likely to be shot.

Poster mentioned Texas.....as of September, you may carry a gun with no permit or training which by the way is opposed by most Texan citizens.

And we seem to be lessening any punishment for violation of what gun laws still exist.
Care to cite a poll that proves that claim?

And only if you can LEGALLY own said gun...

To your last point, blame the prosecutors, who drop gun charges in order to get an easy guilty plea to a lesser charge...

Any civilized country with reasonable gun laws has no where near the number of shootings that the US does.
What laws would you consider "reasonable"? Thorough background checks? We have them. Waiting periods? We have them. Required weaponry training before licensing? We have them. Laws against felons in possession? We have them.

What we don't have are judges with the guts to put the perps where they belong. We have citizens who would rather see police on trial than repeat felons pay the penalty for their uncivilized behavior.

This one, in particular, was a felon in possession. He should not have been on the streets. Police have made a successful arrest. Again. Now let's see how long before he's out on bail, looking for another victim.

Back in the 50's there was much less drug addiction compared to today. Who do we thank for that?

OR NOT...Criminals love unarmed victims.

We are from Newtown, CT (population 26,000 when we left in 2010) where the 26 children and a few of their teachers lives were taken in DEC of 2012. Never, as long as I live, would I have ever thought that it could happen there! But it did - and it's a "bubble" of suburbia, too.

Back in the 50's, kids would drive to school with their rifles in the back window of their pickup trucks... Nobody cared... No school shootings, either...

You could by a gun w/o a background check at the hardware store, or Montgomery Wards...

They were quite "accessible"...

As I've shared with many of my anti-gun or gun neutral friends who don't own guns, they are in fact safer because the criminals know that many of us are armed and as long as the local government doesn't post gunowner's addresses on their website (it happened, look it up) they don't know who has one and who doesn't. So before they go kicking in someone's front door the criminals are made to think twice. Once they know NO ONE has a gun while they themselves still do, don't kid yourself, you'll see what real crime looks like. Agree with a previous poster, arm yourself, take training to be safe and get a CCL. That's IF you're willing to use it if necessary, the last thing you need is a gun if you're too afraid or otherwise hesitant to use it to defend yourself or others.

Reading the Comments on this topic make it clear that everyone is tip toeing around using certain words - which, are in fact, just speaking the truth. Our PC world rules-of-communication. Anyone who has read the news postings of this event knows what happened. We are so scared of reprisals that we now voluntarily muffle ourselves. What has happened to our free America?

Not true.
Only some have chosen to take God out of America.
The some, unfortunately are presented and made viable by the agenda driven politicians amplified by their media lemmings.

The other 80% plus of us (silent majority) still have basic American values.
