I am not sure but I would call the VFW or American Legion and they surely can tell you.

According to the U.S. Flag Code and veterans' organizations, a worn, damaged, or faded American flag should not be thrown in the regular trash. Instead, it must be retired with dignity and respect—ideally through a formal flag retirement ceremony.

Proper Methods of Retirement

• Ceremonial Burning: Traditionally, the flag is folded into its formal triangle shape and placed into a respectful, hot, and completely enclosed fire specifically built for the purpose. Participants stand in reverence—often reciting the Pledge of Allegiance or holding a moment of silence—until the flag is completely reduced to ash, which is then buried.
• Synthetic Flag Consideration: Most modern flags are made of nylon or polyester rather than cotton or wool. Burning synthetic materials releases harmful chemical fumes. If your flag is synthetic, hand it over to an organization equipped to handle or recycle it safely rather than burning it yourself.
• Dignified Burial: The folded flag can be placed inside a sturdy wooden box and buried with respect.
