Many snowbirds/snowflakes are tadpoles that eventually turn into frogs. Meanwhile they pay a year's worth of fees, taxes, as well as other expenses for part time residency and spend a lot of money locally when they are down, keeping merchants, restaurants, medical practices, bank branches and food stores open and in business year round. Their presence thus supplements us frogs' cost of living in various ways.

I have resided in several areas that draw tourists. For years I lived in the Washington, D.C area and learned to look out for the driving of vehicles having other than, DC, MD or VA license plates. DC or course has circles and angled thoroughfares as we all know.

When I rented a car for the first time in Barbados I found out rental cars have special plates so locals can watch out for them. Most Americans are used to driving on the right side of the road, not the left side, ie., the correct side (little British humor)..

I don't think it's so much the "SNOW BIRDS" who own a home. Who cares when they come and go! I think it's the renters that people may have a problem with, although I'm sure most of them are respectful towards the property and area. Some just might not know the rules of the road. LOL

Doubt there are as many who despise snowbirds as it may seem. It’s just that social media attracts the complainers

But, how do you know they are a snowbird?

Since 07, you meet someone new, usually first questions are where are you from, what did you retire from, and what village do you live in. When our parents came to use our homes, never did they say they were renting. Because they weren’t, renting, but using one of homes that we bought just for that purpose.

So unless there is a sticker on someone’s forehead how do you distinguish? Do you just assume because they are not living up to your expectations they are not a frog? Have to be honest, I have played golf with some really nice people, and not so nice, scary, not so scary drivers, rude and really nice people.

Unless you ask, how do you know they are a snowbird, or a renter.

If they answer to either one, does your opinion change so much that you become the not so nice person?

As many of you know, I particularly dislike being looked down on by people who are younger than me, just because I am older. (I truly know I have a lot of annoying qualities but I have always had them.)

Here is a blog about OLDER snow birds from a younger person.

Hmmmpf. I say.

I think snowbirds are great. I call them winter residents. Without our winter residents we could not have the things we have. You continue to contribute to taxes, amenities and beauty in our neighborhoods. Sure it becomes congested in the winter, but in my eyes, you are most welcome. We look forward to our friends coming back each year. Don’t take the derogatory statements to seriously. If people weren’t commenting about you, it would be someone else.

I’m hoping you’re holding up with sarcasm sign, because if this is still bothering you from 2012, I would think you would’ve lightened up by now.

I don't know about that. I have a good friend who is a full timer and she can do a right good job taking care of those pesky gate arms. She is trying for a personal best. LOL

OP, are you referring to "rental" snowbirds, or homeowners (residents) who snowbird in the winter? The 3- or 4-month renters may be the ones who bring the wrath of non-snowbirds for whatever reason...

Years ago when I was visiting my then snowbird father, in Bonita Springs, he was driving along with his Ohio license plate, on Tamiami Trail, not really going particularly slowly, when a local in a pick-up truck roared by in the left lane, stuck his middle finger across the passenger side of his truck and yelled through the open window..." F-YOU, YOU YANKEE A$$****!!!!", to which my dad giggled and said, "Man, I do hate it when they call me a Yankee."
