My daughter has given me a lovely wind chime and before I pack it to bring down I thought I would ask if they are allowed. It has a beautiful sound but I can understand if people prefer not to hear them. Thanks

This is really a social as well as a logistical question. Some wind chimes are very soft in a wind protected area and others sound like Big Ben ringing all day and night. I've heard they are restricted in some villages --- check with the appropriate village authorities. I would never install even those you might consider delightful without discussing this with my neighbors, assuming they are allowed. After a certain amount of time most people would not notice them. However, as nice as you may think they are, and given the personal sentiment involved, you wouldn't want this to be a contentious issue with your neighbors.

Sometimes in this forum, people say that we wouldn't need rules (about pools, dogs, etc) if people would use common sense. Of course we have seen many examples where people have none.
dfn8tly, you are the perfect example of someone who "gets it" - common sense married to consideration for others. Way to go!

I am finding that tolerance within The Villages for many things is very limited. But Im not complaining, I still think its paradise on earth. It is teaching me to be much more courteous and aware of others feelings. Guess I needed some of that after living in the wide open spaces up north where noone seemed to mind many of the things that are restricted in TV.

Personally I can't stand wind chimes and it would annoy me.
You could just put them up and wait to see if anyone complains... problem with that is that most people are too nice and won't say anything. They'll just grit their teeth and be annoyed every day. I'd just thank my daughter and leave them in the box when I got here. Walt. |

In a community populated by older people, one probably finds a lot of TV's and radios on Lanai's turned up high??
As we age, sometimes the hearing isn't so good..... |

Sometimes older people's tolerance of the simpleist things gets left behind when they enter TV - witness all the many posts complaining about everything from train whistles and gas powered golf carts, to dog walking that appear daily on this site. TV is a very nice place but you have to have a thick skin to survive.

whoaa, I guess the tolerance goes way above wind chimes. TV's on the Lanaii, never thought about that.

If wind chimes are very loud yes they could be bothersome, if a dog barks yes it could be bothersome to people, yes if the contractor starts to early it could be bothersome, yes if my golf cart backfires it could bother some people. I think if anyone does anything to upset anybody here,if there might be a problem let's please try and address the situation with the person.
The Villages is a great place and we all need to keep it that way, If we're going to let everthing start to bother us , it'll soon be like home was where most of us were happy to leave. If I bother someone please come see me and we'll take care of buisness. I as well as a lot of other people are here to enjoy the rest of our lives and can't be bothered with petty stuff. Lately there have been a lot of negative postings and it shouldn't be that way in the next best thing to heaven. Just my opinion!!

According to The Villages, barking dogs and televisions on lanai's are the most frequent causes of complaints. I think some people who are new maybe just don't realize how these issues can affect relations with their neighbors. A television at high volume on someone's lanai 20 feet away going for 5 or 6 hours a day gets to be pretty annoying. Generally these televisions are mounted on the person's house, so they are directly facing their neighbor. The sound really carries from the lanai, so you are going to hear everything. Giving Villagers a heads up in this forum is a way of being helpful. Skip 0358, I agree with your advice to speak directly with the person involved. Hopefully they'll be understanding and make a move to rectify the situation. I think many people lived in different environments where they came from - houses weren't so close, and they didn't need to be careful, partiularly where sound was involved. In The Villages, many of the houses back up to each other and are very close. In my opinion, to be good neighbors, we need to learn some new habits. A Skip said, this place is like heaven - let's keep it that way!

I wonder how much is "worry"? I mean, in the vein of "one bad apple in the barrel" - you hear about the complainer or the squeaky wheel... But it's not like there's a statistic you can read somewhere to put it all in perspective.. Like "70,000 people live here and, of what few complaints we have, 90% come from 10 people". Know what I mean? At least, if that info is out there, I haven't found it yet.
