Hello everyone from cold and snowy New Hampshire--my husband and I will most likely buy a new home in TV this year, however, we most likely will not move down full time for 2-3 more years--if we move down sooner than later, we will have to continue to work for a while--has any one else done that? We figure that we might as well get down there and start having fun, even though we will be working-it's better than staying in the cold!!

Hi Cynthia,
Welcome to TOTV! Many Villagers start out as snowbirds or snowflakes (part-time residents). Some Villagers work, as well. However, you should know that it is not easy to find full-time employment here and wages are quite low.

Thanks for the info--I am a nurse and my husband is a computer geek---I am thinking that I might be able to find work quicker than he does--We will be down in March and looking forward to seeing how Sanibel is coming along--when we were there last year it was just a big pile of dirt!!

Something to consider is, " will you need medical insurance for yourself and your husband"? ![]() ![]()

I had to work when moved here. Took MAJOR, MAJOR salary decrease. Eventually recovered from the loss but took a long time. Research job opportunties before you make the leap. Tough for a while for me but am now retired and loving every minute of it!!!!

Yes - others do it. I moved to TV mid last year and still work full time. I commute to Orlando daily and will continue to it for 3 years until I can retire.

Hi Ray and Denise, we New Englanders sure have a lot of cold and snowy weather to put up with--although this year has been pretty good so far--is your new house in Sanibel? We will be looking there and can't decide if we should buy a new house that is already complete or start from scratch and build one. How was the process for you? We can't move for at least 2 or 3 more years--good luck to you! Cynthia

We moved down here pre-retirement to be near my mother-in-law. There are jobs in the service industries and medical/medical related trades. I may be blind, but beyond that I don't see a lot. I guess real estate is an option here in The Villages. Oh, one other bright spot, the pay down here isn't what it was up north. The only thing that increases when you hit the Florida state line is Sunshine! ![]() Ted |
