Default Check Cashing

After having spent two wonderful weeks in Duval last May, came home and put our house up for sale July 1st. Hoped to be Villagers by now, but the housing market here in S.E. Wisconsin is at a standstill. We're renting a patio villa in St. Charles for 2 months (April and May) and wondering where
visitors cash personal checks. My husband called Citizens Bank in TV and was told he'd have to open an account. Any suggestions, or do we just carry cash? Thanks for this wonderful site. Everyone seems so friendly and helpful.

Have you considered an ATM card?

ATM or check card!
Between our check card and online bill-pay through our bank, we probably write about 2 checks a month.
Which means less business for the Post Office (less stamps) so they are going to have to raise postage rates again. Sorry, it's all my fault, evidently.

Angje, hope I did not appear short with my answer! Anyway, an ATM card has worked for us all around the country and overseas. I just withdraw max amount each time so as to not have to pay the fee for little cash withdrawals.

fyi - there's an atm machine at each postal center/neighborhood pool (at leasgt there is south of 466, not sure about north of it, but probably. To avoid a fee, just use your debit cart at the grocery store and ask for cash back - probably varies store by store, but you can usually get at least $50 in cash on top of your grocery bill.

Angje. If your really planning to move there someday, just open an account at Citizens. Gets you an ATM card, a Visa card and local checks. And when you need more money you just go deposit a personal check. And if you do end up buying, makes the transfer of funds, closing, etc go easy. And every post office area has an ATM with no fee.

I agree with i2ridehd....its easy to open a Citizens Checking Account and you cannot beat them for Convience. Besides they have great popcorn when you visit the LSL office.

Default banks

What banks are located in the vicinity? Does the Morris family own any of them?

Bank of America
Central Florida State Bank
Citizens First Bank (8 branches nearby)
Colonial Bank (3 nearby branches)
Regions Bank
Suntrust (4 or so nearby branches)
Wachovia (soon to be part of Wells Fargo Bank)

and probably some others

The developer is into nearly everything and I believe I read somewhere on TOTV that they owned Citizens (just checked their website and it states they were founded in 1991 and are headquartered in TV - sounds like it is owned by the developer)

Thanks to all who offered suggestions. And, Starflite, I certainly did not take offense to your quick reply...I was just embarrassed not to have thought of an ATM card myself! I do pay all bills online and until now, didn't see the need for a debit or ATM card. Live and Learn....thanks for everyone's help.

ATM cards are great - if they work!

We have had issues with our ATM cards due to bank errors and the cards will not work. The bank, in Calif, is sending us new cards but in the meantime we are without ATM cards and have to use credit cards to obtain cash when needed.

It is a good idea to let your bank know you will be using the ATM card in Florida so they don't get upset with out of area activity. (that wasn't our problem as I told our branch manager we would be in TV)

There are quite a few Florida and regional banks including SunTrust. If you're looking for something more national, there are three Wachovia branches in or near TV and two Bank of America branches.
