Default More on Flare up

The issue particularly with gas grills is flare ups. I was a fireman and it was not unusual to have a call for grilling fires on covered wood decks. A charcoal fire is less likely to flare up because after cooking your burgers the charcoal continues to burn off any accumulated grease so the grill is fairly clear of grease. With a gas grill most people, when finished with the burger, just turn the burner off. After a while grease accumulates on the grilling surface and the drip pan. Then one day...poof you can have a major flare up.

We use to by a burger called JTM up around Cincinnati. This is a very fatty burger. We use to say JTM meant Just a Touch of Meat. Sometimes these burgers would cause a flare up as well as steaks. The fat, in moderation, is what makes grilled food taste soooo good.

Please be careful if you don't have a hood move the grill out from under the lanai. If you do have a hood make sure it is degreased occasionally. What are we talking about, walking an extra 5 feet.

My biggest concern about use of a gas grill on the lanai is not safety, but the buildup of greasy smoke on the white ceiling.

How many people find it more convenient to grill on the driveway/garage? If you do, what style house or villa do you have?
