Default GE Appliances

I am totally disgusted with the choice of appliances that The Villages picked out for pre 2012 homes. We closed on our house on 12/10. We bought this house new but the appliances were already in the home.

They were GE Profile appliances which we were led to believe were to top of the line at the time.

Since we bought our house, we have had the GE repairman to our house 3 times. He came twice for the refirigerator and lo and behold our Microwave died just 4 weeks after the warranty expired. Of Course, we had to replace the "mother board" which cost us about $250.00.

This past week we had family visiting and we had no ice!!!!!!!!! Called the serviceman and found out that that the ice maker was dead!!!!!!!!! Paid to have a new Ice Maker installed.

Lo and behold, this morning wake up to find that the Compressor was dead!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I sound mad you are correct, I am actually irate! We had to go out and buy an new refrigerator after only living in our house 1.5 years.

We moved to The Villages based upon our income level etc., and to have to dish out money for appliances that were basically DUDS is ridiculous!

Is there anyone out there who has experienced the same problems with these junk GE appliances. Is it not time for The Villages to step up to the plate and take care of the problems we have had with thes CRAP GE appliances and reimburse us for all of these bad GE appliances

I believe our home was built in '06 and has all GE appliances. Sorry you're having problems but we haven't had issues with any of them. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed!

Our Whirlpool microwave died three months after we closed on our home in July of 2011. Villages replaced it after service people took it apart and declared it unrepairable.

I'm beginning to wonder if there are any quality home appliances in the market. I bought a top level GE refrigerator a few years back and have had to repair several times. It was a piece of junk from day one. Shelves in the freezer fall down, makes all kinds of loud noises, ice maker keeps breaking, freezes food in the vegetable drawers even at mid level settings, it just goes on and on.

It would be interesting to see if there are any unbiased sources of data on appliance repairs. Our house is five years old and none of our GE appliances have needed repair. (Scary to post this though).

Some day you'll need GE service and find out it's worthless.

Our house is 11 years with one repair. An igniter died in the oven.

I can't disagree. GE appliances aren't that great. I'm buying a new fridge in the fall. The one we have freezes everything--and I've had that repaired twice. Years ago we had a top-of-the-line GE fridge, and we had to replace the compressor twice. Then there was a recall and GE sent a repairman to all the owners of that model with yet another new compressor.

The other appliances seem to be okay, although I wouldn't complain if the dishwasher was less noisy...

Default GE appliances

I worked for Sear selling Appliances and soon learned GE was call the boomerang appliance. Although all appliances are not the quality of 20 year ago, Samsung and Whrilpool are a safe bet.

Regarding my GE Appliances. We have lived in The Villages for 5 years, and were informed that the appliances and carpet would probably go in 5 years. By the way, when we were kids, the appliances in those days were built so well, you couldn't kill them if you wanted to. In our 5th year:
1. Ripped up the carpet in most of the house, and installed a laminete. Love it!
2. The garbage disposal fell down, and cracked while in use. Replaced that...found a new one through Craigslist in The Villages.
3. Had my own crappy Frigidare washer/dryer stacker....washer went.
Instead of buying a new set for $2000 on sale, went to Craigslist, and found a wonderful father/son business that refurbished the non-fancey Whirlpools. I called in the morning, he came in the early evening, with the appliances, removed my 5-year-old crap, and installed the reburished machines...Cost $330 total. Even if they go in a couple years, I'd still be paying for the fancy ones. And you know what? They clean and dry my clothes just fine.
3. One burner on the electric stove went. I lifted the top, found the part number, and bought a brand new one on Ebay. Got it for $40 (new) instead of $125 through the repairman, and did it ourselves.
4. The microwave died, but after checking on what it would cost to fix it, found someone in The Villages (Craigslist) who was converting everything to stainless steel, and sold the old Whirlpool to me for $100, unfortunately, that died 3.5 weeks later. Bought a new one in Sears (for what it would have cost to repair the 1st one), for $39 bought the 3 year extended warrantee. They come to your home every year to make sure it's working and will fix anything that's not. If they can't fix it, they repace it with a new one. In 3 years I'll extend it again, because we'll probably be replacing it within 2 more years.

Life is a challenge. I moved to The Villages for the lifestyle, not the house. I'm living and loving it here. I'm a frog, and will be here until I croak! **** happens! Get creative and deal with it! Put a smile on your face and enjoy what time you have left.

Umm... I have a brand-new, never used, side-by-side 25 cu. ft. Whirlpool stainless steel fridge sitting in our golf cart garage. Ice dispenser in door. We switched it out for a french door fridge when we bought the spec house. Make ya a deal! Otherwise it's going to be donated to Habitat when we return in early October.

Don't think this only happens with G.E. I have all upgraded Whirlpool appliances in my new house. Hate the stove, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. Authorized repair has been here twice, and the repairman said all of the appliances are crummy compared to 5 years ago, and none perform well because they are "energy efficient". If I could, I'd replace them all...

Why do you hate your stove, refrigerator and ovens ?

We are nearing a year with our new Whirlpool Gold stuff and we like the double ovens, cook top and three door refrigerator and bar refrigerator. They aren't as fancy as the ones we left behind but they perform well. We brought our dependable old Maytag washer and dryer with us and they are still chugging along.
