Default Moving from Alaska

Spent a fantastic week in The Villages paradise and the people esp. won us over. Hoping to move down there in October. I am sure some of you can appreciate the new home distant moving anxiety we are currently experiencing. Nevertheless, the goal far outshines the potholes!
See you in October.

Get ready for something you're not used to......."warm AND dark.".

I've had no problem adjusting though.

Three suggestions for you.
1, Decluutter.
2. Decluutter.
3, Decluutter.

Hope your moving won't be too stressful as you want to keep your eye on the prize.

Today 4-26-13, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for our area (Southeast Alaska).....It started snowing around 6am and we've received about 5" in the last 4 hours and it's still snowing.....We also have low ceiling fog which makes it tougher to drive.

I'm not sure where you are, but that's pretty unusual for Southeast to be having snow this late in the year.

Depending on topography, snow this late just adds to the avalanche potential.

I promise when you get down here, you won't have to worry about those things anymore.

PASteelers:

That is, Bob & Jan:

Sorry that no one has properly welcomed you to TOTV, at least not in this thread!

It is hard for me to fully understand the adjustments that may (will) be necessary in your lives as you switch from Alaska to The Villages! However, over the 8+ years that I've been here, I've learned that, no matter where you came from, you will adapt to and adopt the lifestyle we enjoy here in The Villages.

From my two trips to Alaska (one in early June, one in mid-July), I'd say that your only real concern will be just how much sunshine or not will fill your day!

I spent a week in hospital in Juneau in July 2012. An amazingly capable hospital, with marvelously capable nurses. But, it pestered me every morning that daylight was established far too soon after night time!

Again, welcome to what some call Lower Paradise!

Per the local Meteorologist here in Juneau, the latest snow fall ever was in May 13, 1965....This April our Temps have been in the low 20's to the mid 40's....

Although it's a long move, I'm sure your excitement will overcome the anxieties.

One thing you will definitely be doing, is taking a long hard look at your winter gear.

While it's a good idea to keep some of it in case you go back (or somewhere else with winter weather), you can most certainly jettison a lot of what you've most likely accumulated.

Bunny boots, Sorels and heavy down coats....were the first to go for me.

Next was the down mitts, my $250 pair of Northern Outfitters arctic boots, down snowmachine suit and large assortment of face masks. Although I only got pennies on the dollar for them (garage sale), it sure saved a lot of room.

Since you're coming in October, at least you'll have your PFD to help.

Oh yeah, you won't be needing those cords coming out of the grill of your vehicle either.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

You're about two weeks from an all time record.

Yuck.....

Hello and Welcome!
I am from Alaska also, I lived just outside of Kenai along the Cook Inlet. I moved here in November and love it here. This is my first warm winter for an extended length and do not miss the cold at all. People are so friendly, also very interested when you come from that far. I will PM you.

Many people moving far say they brought no furniture with them and very little else as it was less expensive than moving it, however chaotic it is to arrive bare. Should you decide to do this, you may borrow my air bed until you can purchase one.

Welcome to The Villages, after 32 years in Alaska we made the move to TV and love it. We don't miss the cold or the snow plus it is nice to be able to drive a hour and actually be in major city. We only towed out a 6 X 10 trailer with our personal items we sold everything else best decision we made!
