Hi, My name is Maureen and my husband's name is Ron. Right now we live near the capital of West Virginia. We are both in our 60's. We are planning to come visit the villages in the fall. We both don't drive but we do ride bikes and I am sure we could drive a golf cart. I would like to know if it is easy to get around the villages without a car. Also how do you choose a village that is right for you. I would like to live near the water since I love water sports. If anyone could help us that would be great.

It's a beautiful place. The way it is set up, you could conceivably survive without a car, if you truly had to.......... It is not near an ocean...........however, there are large lakes nearby, but they are not golf cart accessible. I'm referring to the "Harris Chain of Lakes"...Lake Weir, etc. TV does have a lot of ponds, etc. and bodies of water they call lakes..........not sure if there are any water sports on those lakes. |

Hello and welcome to TOTV. My wife and I are based in Charleston, WV although we are currently away on a temporary assignment. My wife is originally from the Charleston area (Big Chimney) but I am not.
Last month, we purchased a home in the Village of Collier. As West Virginians (one native, one by marriage) I can tell you that you will find many things to like at The Villages. From what I have seen, you should look for one of the more established villages. To us, it looked like the newer ones are located such that only having a golf cart might be a stretch, at least until more stores move in nearby. For the most part, though, I think you can get by without a car if you move close to one of the established squares. Just factor in that you will be closer to the elements (rain, temperature) in a golf cart than you would be in a car. When you set up your visit, be sure to make contact with the agent before hand to make she he or she knows where to focus your house hunting efforts. Good luck!

welcome to totv, moez 18! you are sure to get lots of suggestions re your quest for info - but allow me to suggest that if you have not already done so, watch a bunch of the videos posted on youtube! many are dated, some changes have taken place, but they sure give you the flavor of what the villages looks like and what it has to offer. go to youtube and search on - the villages florida - and you will find much to amuse and inform!

Welcome! We moved here from Grant County - closed last December.
You'll enjoy it here. Blue grass, mountain music, clogging, WV Club. Plenty to keep you busy. It is hard to convey the size of The Villages until you actually get here and experience it. If you aren't going to have a car, you will probably want to be in a pre-owned in the general vicinity of Spanish Springs. That would put you close to shopping and a town square. |

THERE IS ALSO A GROCERY DELIVERY SERVICE AVAILABLE IN THE VILLAGES. NOT SURE OF THE NAME OF THE BUSINESS BUT I HAVE SEEN THEIR ADVERTISEMENTS. GOOD LUCK. GET THE $5 STREET AND VILLAGE MAP BY CALLING THE MERCANTILE STORE IN T.V. |

![]() You may have an idea how much ground TV covers, but until you are here to see for yourself, there's no adequate way to give you a good visual. You asked if it is easy to get around without a car. It is and isn't. I will say a golf car is essential if you do not own an auto and neither of you drives- (which eliminates car rentals). Taxi's are few, most come from outside TV and service is often slow. Golf cars are great in beautiful weather, but not so much fun when it pours or is very cold and you have errands to do. ( Standard ones CAN be outfitted with protected cabs or zipped enclosures, heaters, windshield wipers, for extra $) Golf cars operate at a reduced speed as well and our 90+ miles of paths are meandering so you must allow for that in your travel time. As another poster mentioned, there's not much space to carry big purchases. We do have great dragon boat racing in (privately owned ) Lake Sumter and water volleyball in the sports pools but that's about it for water sports in TV. Although our squares have the atmosphere of quaint resort towns, TV is not set up like a resort, where everything is in easy distance. It's just too big. Don't mean to discourage you.... please DO come and visit. That's the best way to see if our beautiful Villages will accommodate your lifestyle. Last edited by Uptown Girl; 08-06-2013 at 07:49 AM. |

I played golf with a fellow who said that he did not won a car and when he needs one he rents one from Enterprise at Lake Sumter Landing. I then asked him how often he rents a car he said it had been 6 months since he had last rented one.
Just think he has no auto depreciation, no maintenance, no insurance as he purchases the rental car insurance.
