Tesla vehicles incorporate a very high-tech onboard system which monitors ALL systems every millisecond. Data is stored and easily retrieved. It will show EXACTLY what the vehicle and driver was performing before and during the crash. PERIOD. No emotions. No bias.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. In response to an article posted Monday on X about the wreck, Musk said, ‘Yes, this makes no sense. FSD drives slowly through neighborhood streets and this was a high speed crash!’ FSD in Musk’s response refers to “Full Self-Driving.” Tesla’s VP of AI software, Ashok Elluswamy, responded to Musk’s post, writing, “Yup. In this case, the driver manually overrode self-driving by pressing the accelerator all the way to 100% of the accel pedal in this residential area. They reached a speed of 73 mph during the crash, and had the accelerator pressed even after the crash.” The home was occupied at the time by two parents, three young children and Avila. Family members said the vehicle crashed into a front room that had been used as a playroom for the children. |

Just curious, because you seem familiar with the system ... does the on-board, driver facing camera record all that happens in the vehicle and report it to Tesla to be preserved for posterity? Does that mean no more "car sex"? |

Personally, it will be about 10 years before I would trust any self-driving car, gasoline or electric. I would NOT be a passenger in one where the driver put the car in auto drive mode. I would even prefer a car BUILT exclusively for safety, not styling or anything else. It would be round in shape with an extreme padded interior and almost impossible to roll over. It would look like those in amusement parks designed to crash into each other. I would prefer wind up windows with a front opening glass like older jeeps. I would prefer a low RPM engine is simple, low maintenance design, again like older 6 cylinder engines....think Plymouth and Dodge slant head 6 cylinder engines. It would be devolution to get a BETTER product. PS....no back-up cameras......use the damn mirrors.

100% throttle before and after the crash. Foot was on the floor. I'm guessing he got confused and hit the accelerator instead of the brake. FSD literally NEVER does that. Tesla finally clarifies fatal Texas crash, confirms driver manually overrode acceleration Joe |

Probably need wait till the investigation proceeds see what went wrong? Doesn’t Tesla’s have black boxes recording everything?

And just to make this painfully clear, this crash was 100% driver error. He had his foot on the floor, giving it 100% throttle before and after the accident. Kinda makes you suspect of human drivers, doesn't it? Tesla finally clarifies fatal Texas crash, confirms driver manually overrode acceleration FSD does not ever do this (full throttle into a house). I'm not sure why you would say that. I have a Tesla and the company is quite specific in telling you that you must be ready to assume control when using both FSD and Autopilot. If you take your eyes off the road it will warn you to pay attention. Repeated instances will disable the system (FSD) for that trip. Autopilot, which is really only appropriate for highways, works differently, and has much different capabilities. It also monitors that you are paying attention but in a different way. It will also be disabled if you repeatedly don't pay attention. They have stopped shipping new cars with Autopilot. FSD remains a subscription service.

IMO we will all be dead of old age before totally electrified self driving vehicles becomes norm? |

I highly doubt a Tesla employee arrived on the scene before the driver exited the vehicle to personally see that the driver's foot had the accelerator pressed to the floor. It could be that the driver did press the pedal to the floor and it could be that after the crash the pedal was still at the floor. It could be true. But, a statement from Tesla's head of AI who wants to keep his job and who talked to an engineer who peered at some data which gave the value of a sensor tells me what Tesla concluded and not what the scene of the accident showed. There is a lot that points to driver error in this case. Great, it probably was driver error. But the investigation into the accident will show that, not the assertions of those who don't want to be blamed.

FSD(S) is not designed to do this and FSD(S) likely didn't do this but it will be the investigation that determines whether FSD(S) actually did it.

This story and discussion seems like a reminder of so much we see on the interwebs these days. A story that may have a grain of truth (driving the Tesla and there was an accident) then explodes into a hit piece on Teslas, then on electric cars, then driving safety technology. The truth is lost in the discussion. Sensationalism drives these discussion... not reality.
For those who live in the villages, how many have friends who send you every article that talks about how awful it is here? It doesn't match our lived experience. Ask any EV or Tesla owner and you may get a different perspective on how safe those cars are. |

It appears that all Tesla did was report the data collected by the car. Specifically, they would know the position of the accelerator at the time of the crash and whether the drive had depressed the accelerator (in which case the driver has overridden FSD or Autopilot).
