I believe that for some people, the rebel flag is a symbol of southern heritage. However, for most people it is a symbol of the worst type of ignorance and racism. I clearly remember the sixties when the flag was a symbol of those who didn't want schools integrated and wanted to maintain The Jim Crow laws that treated black people as subhuman. The problem is that I don't think you can look at that flag and separate one meaning (southern heritage and states rights) from the other meaning (racism, hatred, lynchings, slavery).

I have never heard the stars and bars being referred to as a symbol for the KKK.

I have lived in too many southern locations with very many dedicated friends to their heritage who fly the stars and bars with deep respect.

Until recently it was flown above the capital building in Georgia due to special interest groups complaining. Does anyone think the stars and bars were over the capital building of one of the Souths biggest cities.....representing the KKK?

Give me a call I do have a couple of bridges left in stock for sale

I believe you folks are referring to the Southern Cross or Confederate Battle Flag and not the Stars and Bars. I have never seen anyone flying the Stars and Bars.

This link might help things.
USFlag.org: A website dedicated to the Flag of the United States of America - Confederate Stars and Bars

There was a huge confederate flag just east of I-275 in eastern Tampa. This seems to be it. http://youtu.be/PBsJG9G6Fpo http://www.tampascv.org/cmp.html

Experts: Confederate flag license plates are here to stay | Dallas Morning News

Personally I dislike seeing this flag flying but it certainly comes well within the range of the First Amendment Right of Free Speech. Of course, there would be a lot a places where displaying this flag would lead to violence.

The article about Texas license plates with this flag is very interesting as that involves the action of that state government.

I have become a big history bluff with the biograghies of famous people:

1. Team of Rivals - The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln - Doris Kearns Goodwin. Book much better than the movie, and she won the Pultizer Prize.
2. FDR by Jean Edward Smith. Covers FDR from birth to death. Most comprehensive book on FDR.
3. Truman by David McCollugh Excellent book of a man who was a true patriot and accomplished a great deal for our country in troubled times.
4. Grant - Jean Edward Smith on a great soldier and a scandal ridden President, although he was never part of the corruption in his administration. Manual on warfare, still used by West Point students.
5. No Ordinary Time - Doris Kearns Goodwin. Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt: The Home front in WWII.
6. Franklin and Lucy - Joseph E. Persico. President Roosevelt , Mrs Rutherfurd, and the Other Remarkable Woman in his Life. Lucy was with FDR in Warm Springs Georgia when he died. Met Joe at a WWII club function.
7. The Bully Pulpit - Doris Kearns Goodwin. Theordore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft and The Golden Age of Journalism. Only read 288 pages of 752 total pages but Doris really makes history come alive. I've got to finish this excellent book.

I can't say enough about Goodwin and Smith as they both thoroughly research their subjects. I found the little things to be very interesting and compelling, as well as the big things like FDR's true love of his life was Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd. Everyone she came into contact with Lucy, loved her gentle ways. FDR's relationship with Missy Lehand, (Magarite), and her total dedication of her life, to him. Grant ordering General Sheridan to make peace with the Indian nation, and Sheridan not listening to him, that culminated into to the massacre of the Indian Nation.

These books are very well written and long so put your reading shoes on.
