Default BB&T: Big fee increase for safe deposit box

Last year the fee was $18.75 and this year it will be $33.75 . That's a $15.00 increase in one year. So now I'm thinking it's probably not worth it for the few important papers/documents that I have.

I'm thinking maybe I should get a fireproof box. Any suggestions?

I have a heavy duty metal filing cabnet that I bought second hand; there's no key to it but I think it's fireproof. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to keep important documents in it.

Yeah they have been doing things for the last few years. I left the bank when they did away with free (no minimum) checking. I know a lot of folks who changed banks at that time too

Since all the consolidation in the banking industry there are very few banks that have not come up with a standard rate card for almost every single service.

I recently read that outside of credit unions most commercial banks have done away with free checking and have fees for almost every service you can think of.

I have been wondering what I'm going to do once we move to the area full-time in January. I have been with my bank since 1978, and I have a very old deal where you got free checking for having direct deposit of your paycheck. In a sense, there's no reason to leave my current bank because almost everything I do is done either by direct deposit or by on-line bill paying, but I still get the odd need-to-be-manually-deposited check, and the only branches my bank has in Florida are in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area.

There are reasonably priced safes of all sizes for sale in local stores. We are thinking about that. I am hoping hurricane, tornado and fire proof for lots of our stuff.

I'll try to describe it: It's just wide enough to accomodate an ordinary envelope. But it's very long. I think it's long enough to accomodate two business size envelopes end to end (19 & 1/2 inches?). And the depth is perhaps 2+ inches.
