We've found we are no longer making use of our timeshare and would like to get rid of it and its associated costs. Have any of you had experience with Florida Veterans Assistance Association of Tampa? We've discovered selling is something that just doesn't happen - and this looks like one of the less expensive ways of donating it. They said that our property is one they would be willing to take.
Any feedback about them or other ideas of getting rid of this white elephant? |

I had one at Westgate in Orlando. You can't sell these things and I can't believe people still buy new ones. I donated mine then took a deduction. I forget who the company was but there was no cost to me. |

I really feel sorry for you guys who have time shares and can't sell them. We have a timeshare at Disney World (Disney Vacation Club) and have had it since 1993. We get points every year and can spend them either at Disney or other time shares around the world. It's very flexible. If we don't want to use our points in a particular year we can bank them to use them the following year. I would never consider getting rid of them. We have been to places where, without a timeshare, we would not be able to afford it.

if it ever came to the point where we/family could not use the points, we would just put them up for rent so that some other family could enjoy a great vacation! the points can be rented to cover the cost of the annual maintenance fees!

I think the key to successful time share owership is the location of the property and management. There are lots of time shares in Hawaii and they are still being sold by major hotels (Hilton, Disney, Marriott). If you purchase one in a less desireable destination, you could be stuck.

I too belong to DVC! We absolutely love it. We go to Disney twice a year (still in VA) with our friends (also DVC members) and family. Love the Flower Show, the Wine Fest and Christmas! The resorts are fabulous. Can really go anytime of the year. What a great investment. The kids and grandkids will have it when we leave this earthly...wait a minute...isn't TV heaven? Where DO we go from here?

I have a timeshare/ vacation ownership thru Marriott.
We have used it to travel the world. We have stay in very high end Marriotts in Europe and have the luxury of being able to have the hotel, airfare and car rental paid for on these trips ever other year. Now that we have bought in TV we will be sell or donate one of the 2 weeks we own. We will just not have the time to travel like we have in the past. Timeshares are great if you use them and have have a good location. Ours is in Orlando. |

WE have the Marriott Grande Ocean in platinum season which is mid June to late August. This is an ocean front resort on Hilton Head Island and even though we do not use it as much as we have in the past we have no problem with renting it ourselves for more than twice maintenace fees every year...even during the economic downrturn.

Hi Nancy,
I see this is your first post. Welcome to TOTV! Caroline offers a good idea. Would it perhaps be possible for you to rent your timeshare? If not, be sure to Google and find out all you can about any charity to whom you consider donating it. You might even Google "charities that accept timeshares". However you are able to solve your dilemma, I wish you all the best. |
