Default Bert & Ernie are NOT gay.

The New Yorker magazine is putting out a cover depicting Bert and Ernie of Sesame Street as a gay couple. In response, Sesame Street put out a statement saying the characters are asexual best friends.

I think it is a shame that we can't just let beloved iconic children's characters be what they are. Fun, happy, joyful, humorous, and INNOCENT. Plenty of time for the stress of life later.

Political correctness at best or maybe at it's worst. Sesame Street can create a gay couple if they want it is no big deal. But labeling a couple of best friends as gay makes me wonder about how perverted things are. What a world. Journalism is a dead industry.

I think the point of the New Yorker cover is being missed. For years, a very few conservative groups trying to stop funding for pbs have tried to say that Bert and Ernie were gay and that pbs was trying to indoctrinate our children into being gay. The New Yorker cover was a very subtle and quite funny play on that.

It's not "journalism". It is anything to titillate, even if innocent children have to be used as the magnet that gets the parent to buy it and nurture the trend instead of the child.

It is all about the money. How many copies of this rag will be sold?

I for one will not be purchasing a copy. I'm getting fed up with the lame stream media outlets and their pack of BS!

That is the style of covers The New Yorker is known for. Remember the cover showing the POTUS as a Muslim terrorist hand-bumping the FLOTUS?

The Bert and Ernie cover shows Bert and Ernie snuggling while watching television. The television screen shows the US Supreme Court Justices. The Defense of Marriage Act was one of the items on the Supreme Court's docket this session.

The cover was depicting a lot of things. Among them was the message that pop culture plays a role in what is accepted in this country. Their covers are talked about by people who never read the magazine. That is one reason they do such cheeky art on the covers.

I just hope that Bert and Ernie won't be scarred for life!

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I have to admit that when I first read the title of this thread, I mistakenly thought it was about Burt & Harry Piel of the Piels Beer commercials of years ago. Guess I didn't watch enough Sesame Street when I was younger. Anyway, it reminded me of when a rumor was going around way back when that Genesee Beer (known for using pure *Hemlock Lake water to make the beer) was suing Piels Beer because Burt & Harry got caught peeing in Hemlock Lake water.

Just a few things here to think about.

How many kids of Sesame Street age will be reading New Yorker magazine?

The New Yorker magazine is a "rag" and is "lamestream media"?

"Labeling a couple of best buddies as gay"? These are puppets!!!

I always did think that Genesee beer tasted a little funny.

Well said.

But....I don't think I have ever tasted Genesee beer.
