Default Comcast's Wifi Hotspot Plan... Ugh!

Look at the quotes from the articles below....

I find it outrageous.

It sounds like people have to opt-out. I wonder how clear they are about what is going on? Few people read those notices or probably even understand what it means....

One more reason why I am glad I bought, own, and control my router and cable modem!

Comcast Corp. is introducing a hotspot service that offers its Xfinity customers a network of Wi-Fi connections in many parts of the country using signals from its customers' routers.

Logically, Comcast's Xfinity Wi-Fi public hotspot rollout makes perfect sense. By using devices that customers already have, it can blanket municipalities and other areas with robust Wi-Fi. As our Internet dependency increases, we need more widespread and speedy connections.

And of course, it's the perfect business model. Comcast gets a fairly cheap way to extend its network—by having its customers pay for the equipment!

I don't see the problem. It's not like the public is loging into your network. Wouldn't it be nice to have Xfinity wifi @ every pool in The Villages?

I'm all for the Comcast plan.

I have the new router here in Georgia and have not opted out.

I only hope one of my TV neighbors has this turned on when I visit my home in TV until the final move so I can get some Internet service for my 1 week stays.

So, will Comcast continue to charge the same rate to rent their router, or will there be a discount since other people have access to that router? If someone has access to your router, can your system be more easily "hacked"????

We have our own system which is secured by password and firewall in place.

It's not a public wifi hotspot, it's only for Xfinity subscribers. Brighthouse or Century Link customers can't use it. The wifi hotspot is for all the subscribers benefit and that includes you. Its not just for "other people".

Nobody is going to hijack your router any eaiser than they can now. Xfinity Wifi hotspot is on a completely different network.

As I said above, I have the system in Georgia.

No one can see my internal network. The router has two isolated systems, one for the internal network and another for the open WiFi.

Here is an article from cnn.com today on the topic:

Unfortunately RIF (Reading is Fundamental) proves true again. I hadn't read the articles linked by the OP, and found my questions answered. Lesson learned!

The articles also says that you will get a letter six weeks before the "sharing" starts in your area and you can opt out.
