Default Citizens Property Insurance is denying claims from Hurricane Debby

The reason is that surge and flood damage are excluded.

That is correct. The only thing that covers flood damage if flood insurance. You can go to FEMA and look up the definition of a Flood.

Your typical insurance does not cover landslides (not a concern in FL.), as well as several other items. You need to carefully review the policy. Also, as soon as a storm becomes a NAMED hurricane, your deductible goes up to the hurricane deductible which could easily be $10,000 or more depending on the value of your house. I will be going over the next renewal very carefully.

The policies are written so that you think that you are covered but there are so many exclusions that you are frequently not covered!

The policies should be written so that a person with a high school education can understand what is - and what is not - covered!

Policies are pretty clear, when it comes to HURRICANE deductible, and coverage. I knew 90% of my policy and what was going to be covered. The big surprise was policy offered over and above extra $1000. To dispose of tree.

FLOOD is and always has been covered in a separate policy, not just in FL, but in any state. I can count 10 different commercials that remind you Flood is not a covered item on your HO insurance. It’s a separate policy.

When I filed my claim, first question was are you OK? Second does your claim involve Water of any kind?

Next day Desk adjuster, Are you OK and can you live in your house?
Then does this claim involve any water damage from rising water, or surge.

Field Adjuster 4 days later, “Well it’s good I don’t have to list water damage from rising water, you don’t have flood insurance.
