I'm having a friend with celiac disease visit. He needs non-gluten food. Anyone know where I can buy some in or near TV? I really don't want to have to go to Ocala or Orlando to buy him some bread. Thanks all!

My grandson is on the GFCF diet and whenever he visits we have to go to Ocala for the specialty foods. We have found that Mother Earth Market on E. Silver Springs Blvd has the best selection. You can however find a limited amount of foods at Publix. You would need to look in their Greenwise section. Fresh Market does not carry anything GF free which suprised us. The other alternative is Whole Foods in Winter Park outside of Orlando. I hope this helps

Our entire Christmas dinner was gluten free as our son requires it. This included roasted pork loin, rice, roasted potatoes with beets, squash, apple pie, pumpkin pie, and everything was made from scratch. In our area Wegmans has an extensive area with all gluten free foods. Let me know what you need and I will FedEx you a care package. Also tell me what you want to serve as I have lots and lots of recipes.

Almost everything in the produce section of any store is safe, meats, rice, eggs, are all OK, and there are substitutes for most everything else. Pie crust was a challenge, but after a couple trys got that also. Not as flaky as normal but OK. You can thicken things with corn starch, olive oil and real butter are fine, and you can actually make pizza. There are several gluten web sites with lots of great information. Go to the Wegmans web site http://www.wegmans.com/webapp/wcs/st...0002&langId=-1 and search on gluten free. They have a list you can print of every product that is safe including a detail list of safe and unsafe ingredients. That way when you read a label and it says contains x&*y3m%-), you can look it up to see if it contains any wheat product or wheat type by products.

Red - I know that the Hannaford's in my area has a relatively large selection of GF products. I think Sweetbay is owned and operated by the Hannaford chain so perhaps it would be similar?

Russ, I think your right. I think I saw a small section of Gluten Free foods in an aisle near the veggies. Red, I know that Whole Foods in LA has a huge section so maybe the one in Winter Park will have it also.

Thanks, gang. I'l check out Sweet Bay. I do miss Whole Foods. It used to be so easy to fix Jim something whenever he dropped by -- just run to the store and get whatever. Fortunately, I still have a lot of my old staples for him. It is really only the bread and pasta that are issues and I'll definitely check Sweet Bay for them.

Having a wheat (gluten) allergy myself, every time I visit my house in the Villages I look in the various stores at the Gluten free section, here is what I found:


Sweet Bay, Publix and the newly renovated Winn- Dixie all have a limited amount of gluten free products. There is more of a variety if you don't mind baking your own as there are several good bread, etc, mixes that are gluten free. For bread mixes "Pamela's" or "Gluten free pantry" are the best. I haven't found a prepared bread I like.

If you are looking for a treat- "Pamela's" brand gluten free cookies are the best prepared cookies (especially the ones with chocolate chips), although stay away from the lemon ones- they taste awful!(IMHO)

The Fresh Market carries gluten free items, however, they are not in their own section. The bread is frozen and the other items are along side the other products containing gluten.
