Thumbs up Great use for Magic Jack in Foreign Countrys

With a small computer like a netbook you can easily connect Magic Jack to it along with a cheap $5 telephone ( from stores like Target) and make a phone call to anyplace in the US for free and they can call you free. Internet service is required of course but if you really need to make calls in a foreign country this is a good option if you don't mind carrying around a netbook. No special setup is required. You just dial the phone number in the US you want to call and they just dial your phone number with area code (no country code required). If your netbook isn't turned on while your traveling you will get a email with a voice attachment if the calling party left a message. The netbook is also great for off loading and doing some basic editing of all the photos you take on vacation. We just returned from a trip to China and it worked great. Verizon Cell service would have cost me $2.00 a minute. Voice Quality was great. It seems like Magic Jack voice quality has improved a lot recently. Back at the Villages now and the voice quality seems excellent. Can't be beat for $20/yr.

As an aside just be careful if you use an internet cafe. I think I was ok using the Hotel internet connection but when I used internet cafe computer and internet (having nothing to do with magic jack ) I had my address book taken and emails sent to it requesting money. The email was an obvious hoax and no direction on where to send the money was given so no one would have fallen for it. By the way they also changed the address that reply messages were directed too and this took awhile to figure out and correct. Believe it or not its an option in My Yahoo mail.

I used to do phone service thru the internet, and there was a slight time delay when one person was speaking and the other person replied, which got kind of annoying. Is that something you get with Magic Jack?

Yes you do get this with MJ as well with any VOIP. I had MJ for a year and it is the one reason I dropped it. Also the company I worked for was in process of converting all their phone systems to VOIP and I could tell every time I was talking to someone you was using VOIP.

Another thing you will notice is that both parties cannot talk at the same time as you can on a land line phone.

The VOIP delay is annoying, but virtually eliminating the monthly bill is a winner. http://www.ooma.com/

I've been wondering about the Magic Jack lately and I have a question about it. I have an all in one machine, scan, fax, copy and print. When we get to florida we will have cable through the internet and most likely a cell phone so my machine won't work. Will the fax portion of it work with the Magic Jack or will I have to have a dedicated land line for the fax to work?

I'm not sure what to do for service when we get to Florida.

We also have the same printer and subscribe to the Comcast package for cable, phone, and IP and we have no problem with incoming/outgoing faxes. We use PureTalk ($10/mo) for our cell phone and are very pleased with that, as well.

Smile Magic Jack Delay

Recently my calls with magic Jack have had almost no delay. Quality of voice is better then my Verizon Cell phone. Last year I noticed some delay but that seems to have improved. I'm currently using Comcast Internet. I may just be lucky but so far so good and for $20/yr its a real bargain.

I have had my Magic Jack for over 5 years now and other than a couple of issues it has been great .Even better when I think how much I have saved over this 5 year period by having it.

Magic Jack is better used with a dedicated computer. I use a old laptop , I turn on the computer and shut the monitor off or close it and it works great. When using Magic Jack with the computer you are working on it will tend to slow things down a bit and can be a problem. When running videos, downloading or games it will not work properly if running with an average processor.
