Default Homosassa Springs State Park

Our son's family (granddaughters - ages 2, 4, and 6) will be visiting from San Francisco the first week in May. We are planning to go to Clearwater and stay at the beach one night. I was thinking of taking them to Homosassa Springs state park the next day. Has anyone been there? I thought it was just a state park but it says that it is a wildlife park with a $13 adult admission. They like hiking and natural scenery - plus this would be a good antidote to the inevitable trip to Disney.

Last year around about now we visited this park and really enjoyed it. You get to see some manatees, alligators, and Lu the Hippo. Just watch where you are standing when Lu decides to mark his territory.

The most fun I've had with my kids and grandkids was the Captain Memo Pirate Cruise in Clearwater. Two hours of entertainment (treasure hunt, squirt gun battles, games) while touring the inlandwaterway on a boat done up as a pirate ship. Beer available!!!

The State park is an excellent day trip. Almost all the Florida wild life is there to see up close. Takes at least 2-3 hours to walk through and see it all. Another one is to go to Gainesville to the Butterfly rain forest and the Florida History Museum. Both at the same location at the University and very worth while. Again you can spend 4 hours there and see a lot.

Homosassa is great.. the manatees and bird sanctuary in particular are great.

Another really cool place for kids is Gatorland, gators and birds, plus shows and lots of other stuff, including kids "wet area" , turtles and other critters.

I think gatorland is actually more interesting. The Entertainment Book has a buy one get one free, their admission is $20 or so.

We love Homosassa Springs.
It's natural and fun and the little ones seem to really enjoy the birds and animals.
Watch out when LULU goes backwards....
