According to About.com:
http://golf.about.com/cs/historyofgo...t_golfword.htm "No, "golf" is not an acronym for "gentlemen only, ladies forbidden." If you've ever heard that, forget it immediately. Better yet, find the person who told you and let them know it's not true. "Like most modern words, the word "golf" derives from older languages and dialects. In this case, the languages in question are medieval Dutch and old Scots. "The medieval Dutch word 'kolf' or 'kolve' meant 'club.' It is believed that word passed to the Scots, whose old Scots dialect transformed the word into 'golve,' 'gowl' or 'gouf.'" By the 16th Century, the word "golf" had emerged. Let's remember one thing: 6 months ago many of the nice things that have been said in this thread about Phil could have been said about Tiger - great husband, generous with his wealth, proud father of two, devoted son to his father Earl etc. etc.
6 months later we know a few different things. Let's hope 6 months from now we don't hear something about Phil or Westwood or Kim or... My point is - who cares about what they do with their sex life or how they compose themselves off the course. I love golf. I watch golf. I play golf. I want to see the best compete on the course and not in the tabloids. |
