If they are moving through the aisle , not carrying a load and not loading or unloading they don’t close the aisle.

When backing out of a parking space I hire a kid with flags to alert pedestrians who may be walking nearby. And sound my horn every second. If that is not safe I would ask the store to block off both sides of the aisle just to be sure….

Anyway……

I was totally engrossed in looking at plants in the greenhouse section of a big box store.

A forklift appeared, quite close by, in the same aisle as me.

One kid was in front of it waving two flags like some sort of drum major, while another kid was driving the forklift.
(By kid I mean maybe late teens, early 20s.)

They paraded on by.

I was a bit surprised at the lack of clearance that had been between the forklift and me and then I thought….that could not have been right.

Well, never one to pass up a teachable moment , I went to the spot where the two had stopped the forklift and said — in the kindest, most gentle, supportive, encouraging way possible, “Hey guys, you should totally clear customers out of the way before driving a forklift down an aisle.”

They stared at me blankly.

(That’s the end of the story. Nobody was flattened.)

And, NO, I did not report it to the manager. Geez. I was just making the world a better place in which to live — and maybe saving some other gray-haired gardener who might not have hearing as good as mine. Besides, I was glad to see those kids working. No need for drama on my part.

(I found the “halo rule” but 3 feet does not seem like enough in a public place — and I don’t think the halo was there anyway.)

So? Was I right or was I wrong? Should that aisle have been totally cleared of customers?

Just Curious Boomer
Maybe you should have found the answer to your question before you told them the rules.

There is a thing called "Situational Awareness". Apparently not in use during this incident.

Good morning, TOTVers,

First of all, thank you to those who actually know stuff about forklifts for participating in the actual conversation.

Also, a thank you to those who were wise enough to grasp the situation and surmise that training should have been better. That’s what I thought, too……….

Those kids thought they were doing OK. They weren’t. That’s why I talked to them directly. I am pretty nimble — but there could have been some not-so-nimble or vision impaired or hard-of-hearing customers in that long, narrow aisle. There was not much margin for error and had there been an accident, not only would someone have been seriously hurt, but those two kids’ lives would have been changed, too.

TOTV still has some posters capable of conversation and sharing opinions with reasoning.

But……..

TOTV also has a lot of posters who are so easy to poke into predictable, obnoxious responses that have nothing to do with the subject at hand and everything to do with their going around in azz-on-shoulder mode, trying to make themselves feel better while trying to make others feel worse. (I see that as their problem not mine, but I know those types keep some others from posting.)

This thread has the usual examples of venom — from Mr. Shorzenabunch (of which there are more than one around here) to, ironically, someone who said I need to volunteer with the homeless???? (Hey! Virtue-Signaler, I WAS doing good work. Maybe I saved somebody from being a victim of carelessness. And yet you think I am one of those who cares only about themselves. Look around. Geez.)

TOTV is free theater. And I can’t seem to give up my seat.
