Members of the military have held umbrellas for senior politicats for a very long time. They also carry their luggage, serve their coffee and do all manner of things away from the White House. I bet that if you asked the young Marine in the video, he would tell you that he was honored to hold an umbrella for his president.

Nothing new in the picture. Just dumb people who are looking to stir things up.

I don't have any problem with the umbrella. I do, however, think the behavior in the original video was extremely disappointing. Not that it would matter but that video was taken while he is deploying the military into Syria. The coffee salute was dismissive and disrespectful. I would give more of a nod of appreciation to the pilot and flight attendant as I am leaving a plane.

that link shows no longer available ....how about this one just recently....no excuses what so ever and no comparables in history:

Obama salutes Marines with coffee cup - Washington Times

Just another indicator of mindset.....and there is no defense or excuse for such an atrocious disrespectful act.

I agree President Obama missed this opportunity to salute our fine military. The blowhards sure did not miss the chance though to use them as pawns in the upcoming elections. That's a lot worse IMHO.

Bush salutes with dog, no problem. Obama salutes with coffee cup, outrage. Bush Sr. and W have umbrellas held, no problem. Obama has umbrella held, outrage. Makes you wonder.

Really, "no comparables in history"? I guess you didn't bother to look at post #8. However, an argument could be made #8 isn't comparable.

Really? A missed opportunity? It's a bit of an embarrassment to think the president should see it as "an opportunity" or someone should think of it as an opportunity. I would think it would be second nature to admire and recognize the military, just look the man in the face for gosh sakes and nod if you can't salute. They are our foremost protectors of our freedoms and our way of life. They sign up to die for our freedom.I don't think there is any comparison to dissing the military and using his bad behavior politically. And, frankly, I don't think this has anything to do with the upcoming elections. I think people are sickened to see such a non presidential reaction to those we send to defend our country.

He made an obvious effort to look someone in the face, he saluted. Yes, it wasn't a total commitment but it really isn't comparable to someone who holds up his coffee up in the air and doesn't even look at the man.
