I see a complaint as a "negative opinion" because the person is saying something negative about a situation.

That is not to say that they are being negative - if something is unsafe then they have a right to complain about it and are taking a positive step by so doing.

I never complain. I just bring attention to something.

I think a problematic issue with opinions is that people often fail to recognize the distinction between opinion, assumption, and fact. The preceding is an opinion.

Complaining can be productive, but usually isn't. Also an opinion.

In my mind's eye, an opinion is from someone that has some particular expertise or knowledge on that topic. A complaint has a negative element no matter how articulate.

Actually comparing opinion vs complaint is incommensurable.

This post should not be considered criticism of the OP but just commentary.

In regards to a forum such as this...why does it really matter?

I have to admit getting a chuckle from the complete irony, from those times when someone complains about something and then is attacked...by those with different opinions.

I left the site almost 2 months ago due to a few telling me that my thoughts and opinions needed to be kept to myself. It's funny when I said I was out and done I received almost 50 p.m.'s asking me not to leave. Sometimes you just need to take a step back, not login to the site, and let things be.

If we all didn't have different thoughts, opinions and advice, we could make a Stepford Movie 2. I just love it when someone has an idea that, makes my life easier, makes me smile, and sometimes just bust out laughing.

so I have read and reread all the foregoing comments and now wonder how posters would define complaints that are made against a business? How about a legal complaint?
Are the aforementioned complaints negative?

And I wonder if opinions are no more than a general expression about a given topic (person place or thing)?
do some of us expression our opinions too forcefully or perhaps too absolute?

Does a topic or even a word cause one to over react?

Indeed body language and fine nuances are missing from our posts. some of us are creative wordsmith some of us are not emoji help .

It is obviously a personal choice. However like the 50 or so PMs you received most on TOTV (and any where else for that matter) do what is right and respect each others opinions.

There will always be a few antagonists who are in the minority....less than 5%......so why let them interfere with the other 95% of us?

Just use the ignore feature and "do not engage" them.

complaint..expressions of grief, pain, dissatisfaction, protest or outcry, formal allegation

opinion.. a view, judgment, appraisal, a belief stronger than impression but less than positive knowledge, formal expression of judgment by an expert

When does the old saw "depends on whose ox is being gored", apply?

When does "what was intended and what was expected come into play?

Do we confuse or inter-mix the above-stated definitions?

Is the term "bellyaching" an appropriate substitute for complaining"?

Perhaps the misinterpretation is not so much in what is said but how the poster expressed it?

Perhaps the comments by the sending poster hit a nerve with the receiving poster?

Civil discussion requires civility, calm cognitive thinking and objective responses.

Does the "I can't define pornography but I know it when I see it" rule apply?

Since TOTV is designed as a forum to offer opinion I am wondering how other posters define the difference between opinion and complaint?

I see duality here, whether intentional or more likely accidental.
