Those on the throne do not always take on their own name as their Regnal names. Elizabeth and Charles both did, but Elizabeth's father, King George the VI's pre-regent name was Albert and he was known as Bertie. Same with his brother, the abdicated King Edward was David pre-regent.

The female progeny of the Regent have always been pushed down the line of succession by their brother's offspring, and female siblings were bypassed by males in the line.

UNTIL 2013 when the updated succession act essentially ended male primogeniture.

Female siblings are no longer bypassed by males. That is why Prince William's daughter, Charlotte, remains in the line ahead of her younger brother Louis. Because she was born AFTER 2013. Since the Princess Royal, Queen Elizabeth's daughter, Anne, was born prior to 2013, she remained by passed by her brothers Andrew and Edward and their progeny.

The other thing that the 2013 Act did was remove the former provision (which was in place since 1772) which prevented Catholics from being in the line of succession or eventually ascending to the throne.

That’s very interesting. Thank you for the info. I only dabble here and there in the Royals but of course, the Queen has been the Queen for as long as I can remember.
