Default A real pain in the donkey

Yesterday was time to pay bills. For some reason, I couldn't connect to WellsFargo. I called my banker and they said they had no problem. Hmmn. My computer, I guess. Today I tried again using google for the search engine. As various WellsFargo options come up, this is what I find:

In a posting at Pastebin.com, a group calling itself the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters claimed responsibility for last week’s outages at Bank of America, Citi, and JPMorgan before hitting Wells Fargo. It said it would attack U.S. Bancorp on Wednesday and PNC Financial Services Thursday.

The posting said the attacks would continue until a video insulting the Islamic prophet Muhammad was removed from the Internet. But computer security expert Dmitri Alperovitch, who has been investigating the attacks, said it could not be determined whether that was the actual motivation.

Not addressing political implications which is a no no here, has anyone else experienced this? I wonder how to make our banking life secure. Wonder if my "payees" will take that for an excuse for a late payment

I was having a tough time getting into chase.com over the weekend to check my credit card activity. Nothing on their site but through google found other postings about inability to login and same references to denial of service attacks.

Exactly why I bank at Citizens. I'm staying away from the BIG guys in this current environment. Citizens is great,, when you call, you get a PERSON!!!

I think I recall having a problem logging in to WF a couple of days ago but just thought it was like other times I've had. Usually waiting makes it work. Next day, no problem. Good reason not to wait until the last minute. I detest the WF payment system. It was great when Wachovia had it (different, more reliable system til WF bought them and changed it). I'm stuck for now but only use it as a backup account.

I have most of my bills on AutoPay, so if the payment isn't on time it's the bank's fault, not mine, and I don't have to worry about connecting to the bank.

If you have a PNC bank (took over RBC) around, go with them. They use the Wachovia payment system and are actually a better bank. Very pleased.

I was surprised to learn that my bank (citizens) uses a company in Nevada to process online transactions. To make a mortgage payment (initiated by me online) this company actually sent a paper check to the bank here. ???????????

if for any reason a bill pay bank does not make a payment on time, it is not accepted by the payee as a reason to be late.

There are very many payees that will buy that excuse (even if the bank was the cause) and waive a late fee....maybe once. It is still the obligation of the payer to see that payments are processed to "arrive" at the payees location on time.

This bank episode is nothing more than a confirmation of the weakness in our ever growing cyber controlled world. Cyber attacks like this one with the banks should be viewed as the hackers making ANOTHER test run at capability.

Our futures will definitely see more of this type "warfare".

Default Bills by checks

I know many people will think I am crazy, but I still write and mail checks. It is about jobs. Beside the postal employees jobs, there are the people who make the trucks, tires, the paint, the fuel, the checks and many more. It is a Pain-in-A--, but we need the jobs. Being retired, I can find half hour a month to do it. It is the least I can do for our country.

I do as well.......write and mail personal checks. Old fashioned I guess, but at least I know I'm sending them ahead of time...

We saw the national news spot last evening about the banks being hacked into.

We also use a local Vermont based bank here.......so no problems that way, however, my Visa Card is under Bank of America now, for which I write out a personal check.

That is terrific. My problem, which is the same with my shopping list, is I write it, stick it in the envelop, put the stamp on, and then forget to mail it.
