Many great songs from the early 60's. I wonder how many people know that he got his first recognition as a result of the Buddy Holly tragedy. Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper we on their way to perform in Fargo ND, Vee's hometown, when their plane crashed. Vee and his recently formed high school band, The Shadows, auditioned to take Holly's place and got the gig.

I met him once and bought him a drink, I guess since I was in the Army he should of bought me one. I had just returned from 13 months in Korea and was sharing a mobile home with another GI in Savannah, Georgia. My roommate went out every night and I was still kind of reclusive and trying to adjust to the real world, I would answer not ready yet.

After a couple of weeks I finally said, OK I'm going. We went to the Esquire Lounge on Abercorn Blvd. It was the happening place in town, not long after the Cavalier became the hot spot. I think we paid a small cover and went in and Bobby was singing. He caught me off guard since he had a full beard and appeared to be not much older than us. After reading his obix, it appears he would of been 29 when I met him. Anyway, he put on a good show and I was easy to please at that time since it was my first time out in Savannah and in a night club in long time. On his break we invited him over and he sat at our table and talked some.
