I'm getting a sewer gas smell from the drain in the kitchen sink.

What causes it and how do I get rid of it?

Put almost any citrus in the garbage disposal it will freshen it breathe. You may have to repeat w/ soap

Try equal amounts of baking soda and vinegar, it will foam up the scummy stuff and drain, then follow with citrus and ice cubes...ice UBS help sharpen the blades and citrus smell nice

Another thing to do if you don't already, is to clean out under the rubber seal. You won't cut off your hand in the disposal, just take a scratchy sided sponge and gently go into the disposal, pushing the rubber seal/neck inward and then gently push the sponge against the seal while bringing it back out. You would be amazed at how much gunk is in there and will start to give a fowl odor if not cleaned out.

Boiling water poured down both sides of the drain followed by a diluted Clorox rinse will do the trick...

I have a toilet brush that is used strictly for the disposal ( one that is never used in the toilet). Periodically I will sprinkle baking soda or cleanser in the disposal as well onto the brush and insert into the disposal & like earlier stated you won't like what you see that comes out from under the rubber gasket. Be sure to rotate the brush while moving up & down.. you'll end up with a sweet smelling disposal area.

We had the same problem, but since I started running the coffee grounds through the disposal, problem solved. The builder disposals are not stainless inside, and they rust, causing a rough surface where odors form. When this one gets replaced, I will upgrade. Also, the drain for my dishwasher goes directly to the sink drain, not through the disposal like in previous homes. The powerful dishwasher detergent will go a long way toward keeping the disposal clean, so I will also re-route the drain.

Along with the other excellent suggestions you could try dumping baking soda into the disposal and then pour white vinegar on top of that. It foams up, let it sit and run boiling water through the disposal.

I hesitate to recommend this, but once a day I will make sure the disposal is turned off and run my hand around the inside of the disposal and take out anything still in there, then flush with boiling water. They are a great invention, but they need thorough cleaning.
