We have 20 girls here in PA and 2 turkeys growing for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love them but will have to get rid of them once we move down to TV full-time.

A few years ago I vacationed in Key West, and I took a trolley tour that went all over Key West. I was so surprised to see chickens running free in some people's yards. At first I thought I was seeing things.

Never mind New Jersey. Some people are raising chickens legally in BROOKLYN.

Yes the chickens have really taken over in Key West. There's a rooster that hops up on a roof and crows, not just at daybreak but all day long!

At one time virtually all our food was organic and free range—and that wasn't so long ago! Look what we're choosing to do to ourselves—and our children—nowadays. Look at the constantly increasing percentage (in children in particular) of food allergies. It's not hard to imagine what is causing this: In some cases food is genetically modified, so what was once simply "food" is now "genetically modified food," but to use the word "food" for both is questionable. And then there are additives like "flavor enhancers" (which too often is "MSG") and the increased use of pesticides. Could these account for the increase in food allergies? Do we question what the meaning is behind "being allergic to FOOD"?! We do NOT have to live this way if we so choose. I agree that organic foods and free-range meat (and I too eat less and less meat as I get older) are more expensive, but are we worth it, and are our children worth it? Can we not set priorities, maybe go to the movies less or eat out less often, so that there is more available for healthier foods? After all, when we had gasoline crises in the past, we found ways to manage.... See more info in the following link: Food Allergy Among US Children: Prevalence and Hospitalizations Look at some of the points made and how can they NOT make us more conscious of this issue:

The best chicken I ever had was one our son prepared for us. It was when he was learning how to slaughter chickens -they were organic chickens.
I remember going with my Grandmother to pick out a live chicken, and the butcher preparing it for her. I also recall hoping that the chicken would have an unlaid egg in it. This was in New York City. Does anyone recall eggs that had a double yolk? The wonderful memories continue, but I will end here.

Let's hope we don't start having free range chickens down here in The Villages.
Then we'd have to put up with reading chicken poop threads. |
