I just received my car insurance renewal and was stunned by the new premium. Nothing has changed except both my car and myself are one year older. I have not gotten any tickets so what on earth would make my insurance go up 30%?
Has anyone else run into this situation recently? The yearly premium went from $746 to $946. ![]() |

You don't say what insurance company you have but I have Geico and my premium went down a few dollars year over year.

Yikes!!! I just shopped insurance here in Michigan and everyone told me that it would be a lot cheaper for me when I moved to Florida. Your price is cheaper but much.

That seems odd. You should call your agent.

My experience when I moved down here last year is that rates are high in The Villages. |

1. First call to your agent to ask whu there was an increase.
2. Another call to different agent, to get a lower rate. A 30% increase for no reason, doesn't sound reasonable to me!

Sometimes companies have across the board increases and the agent has no control to change that. It also could also be an age thing that you mentioned. It's definitely time to shop around. I obtained a really good rate after shopping around at AAA insurance agency. They signed me up with Safeco insurance and my premiums are lower than they have been in years. They assured me that it is a good company. First I would make a phone call to my agent though to find out why it went up so drastically.

I changed my auto insurance a couple of years ago. I called Villages Insurance in Colony and they got me a couple of quotes. I ended up going with Progressive and saved a few bucks. The folks at Colony are very easy to work with and do a great job. They also got me my home and my golf cart insurance.

Call the insurance company and find out if your credit score has affected your rates. We recently had a similar situation with increases on rental properties we own in New Mexico. Turned out to be a bogus blip on our credit report that caused an increase in the rates. A call to the insurance company can correct this if that is the problem.

Did you move from another area? That could be the difference. Our insurance actually went down by 30% when we moved here in Dec 2013.

We had Progressive (bought in NY State) for 6 years before we moved to Florida. When we got to Florida, the Progressive rate sky-rocketed. On the Motor Home alone, it went from $1,200 to $1,800 and the coverage was less than I had in NY. I called the company directly and did manage to get them to grandfather me for the same coverage for a little less than $1,400 because I was a long term customer with an excellent credit score and outstanding driving record. At the end of that year, it went back to the $1,800 figure and less coverage. I LOVED Progressive, but price won out. I went to Geico (on-line and over the phone) and have been pleased with their rates. I have the car and the motor home with them.
We, in Florida, have a Governor who is VERY insurance company friendly. They are getting great rate hikes and are allowed to severely alter coverage so the companies can keep more money in their pockets. What do think happened with the sinkhole insurance? Big business is really taken care of in this state and the rest of us can suck eggs! Be sure to let your voice heard in the upcoming elections. Xavier

You have all made some good suggestions. Thank you for your input.
I have insurance with Travelers through the Villages Insurance Agency. I did call my rep and they verified the increase. They had Travelers recalculate and came up with a $10 reduction over the proposed new rate. I will also ask my agent to see if something happened with my credit score. They also gave me a quote from Progressive which was $770 per year, just a small increase over my last years premium with Travelers. So I will be getting other quotes from AAA and other independent agencies. Luckily I have a month or so to gather the needed information. My agent also mentioned that The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation authorized this % of increase within the last year. So beware when your insurance renews. |

I also was insured through Travelers for about 2 years. I use The Villages Insurance at Colony. Mine jumped 17% and then the next 6 months another 5%. When I called The Villages, they ran me through several companies for quotes and ended with Auto-Owners.
I also have not had any accidents, tickets, and a great credit score. It was Travelers who raised their rates, so I was told. Oh well, maybe they didn't want as many policy holders!!!! |
