Timeline of how major world religions developed
Timeline of how major world religions developed
It is fascinating to see the timeline of how the major world religions developed and how much of the globe they covered - or gave back - at various times. What is amazing is the rapidity of the change during certain periods of time. The map is redrawn a second time at the end to show again how everything developed. http://mapsofwar.com/images/Religion.swf

The timeline uses the dating system of AD and BC, the Roman (Gregorian) calendar.

Blue (Christianity) looks a little too prevalent in North and South America. You should have areas where Judaism and Islam would show up during the 20th Century like for NYC, Chicago, and Detroit and other major cities for other religions than Christianity.
Think there were some struggles over Buddhism in China as well. Last edited by Taltarzac725; 11-22-2010 at 02:08 PM. |

So I clicked on "Today's Posts" as always, and this was the first new post on the list. The next one was entitled "Looking for a good carpenter". Interesting juxtaposition!

BK: So now since your post, it is followed on "Today's Posts" by "Looking for a Fishing Tackle Shop"! Where there's a Carpenter, can a Fisherman be far behind?????

I know! I saw it and laughed out loud and wondered if anyone else noticed.
All we need now is a post in the movie forum about There's Something About Mary or a recipe for loaves or fish in the cooking forum. See what you started Barb! |

Thanks Barb,
Very interesting. I see that the same website has other timeline maps including March of Democracy. |

You would think that Utah with its Mormons would also be a gap in the sea of blue especially when looking at a historical map of major religions. Buddhism has also had an interesting history in China and should not be as strong a presence as the map indicates. http://buddhism.about.com/od/through...inahistory.htm Last edited by Taltarzac725; 11-23-2010 at 08:27 AM. |

Isreal is about the size, population wise, of New Hampshire or New Jersey. If I'm not mistaken, there are more Jewish people in the US than in Isreal. Isreal is very small. Maybe I misunderstood, but Mormons are Christians. |

Tal, I think you're nitpicking on this one. If we use your logic, we're also missing a few religions. I'm sure Sunworshippers, Wiccans, et al. would like to have their religions included. The fact that America has other religions than Christianity is beside the point -- the majority of people living here are Christian. While Europe has a large Muslim population, the majority are still Christian. Even though China probably has more agnostics and atheists (either by choice or force of the government) than Buddhists, Buddhism is still the prevalent religion there. I read this map as showing the prevalent religion of an area, not that it is the only religion in that area. Few (even Israel) countries are all one religion.
