Default U must be rich to own a Lanai

Oracle Corp. (ORCL) Chief Executive Officer Larry Ellison has agreed to buy 98 percent of the Hawaiian island of Lanai, according to the state’s governor.

“It is my understanding that Mr. Ellison has had a long standing interest in Lanai,” Governor Neil Abercrombie said in a statement. “His passion for nature, particularly the ocean is well known specifically in the realm of America’s Cup sailing.”

Lanai, Hawaii’s sixth-largest island with an area of 141 square miles (365 square kilometers), is currently owned by billionaire David Murdock’s Castle & Cooke Inc. Ellison’s software industry rival Bill Gates married his wife Melinda on the island in 1994.

The sale includes two resort hotels, two championship golf courses and club houses, more than 88,000 acres of land including a 600-acre residential development, a solar farm, parks and utilities

I still work full time. My employer uses Oracle for accounting, procurement, order management, payroll, etc. I spend 90% of my work week using Oracle. Glad to hear that Larry E. is doing so well he can afford to buy an island. Some days at work I start talking to my computer..."I hate Oracle" or "Da___ Oracle."

I sure wish I could afford a Lanai. All I can afford is this screened in porch.

Lanai is not as nice as other Hawaiian islands. It is mostly baren wind swept land without the tropical beauty you find on the other islands. It was almost entirely covered with pineapple fields until the growers moved overseas for cheaper labor. There are about 3,200 residents that live on the remaining 2% of the island. Appears that most of the trees and vegitation were cut down long ago when the pineapple plantations were started. There are nice beaches if you really want to get away from everything.

I guess that's why Mr. E. is "only" buying 98% of the island

The problem with this Lanai is "There is no room for expansion."

He bought the wrong island for expansion. For that he should have bought the big island of Hawaii as every time Kilauea volcano erupts the island grows. Plenty of expansion there but he would have to wait a few hundred years for it to cool!

But is it an east-facing lanai?
