Our culture (maybe all the world) loves "status symbols".....but to what end. I'd rather be approachable by those around me than making an "impression" (you will, one way or another).
I have never liked status symbols, or anything that is expensive. I can afford expensive things, but I never buy them. Would not even consider buying a Rolex.

Got a solid gold Rolex as a retirement award years ago. Never worn it in public, currently stored in my safe deposit box. Too uncomfortable to walk around with $20k exposed on your wrist. People get killed for less than that.

That’s why the simple life is best. No need for the extravagant things anymore.

My goal is to have four of them. I have four grandkids. My goal is to leave one for each of them when I am gone. You can leave money for your inheritors all you want but nobody will think of you or remember you with a pile of cash or not a pile of cash. But every time they put on that piece of jewelry on have it be a ring or a watch that they will remember that it was mine and they’ll remember me. Hoping they’ll have pleasant thoughts of course.

Don't need a watch. I use my phone as a watch like most of us I guess.

Oh well was going to offer you a great deal on my slightly used one but guess you would not be interested.

Using a phone instead of a watch is definitely a younger generation thing. I see a lot less watch wearing here too.

Rolex from Mexico made in Switzerland. $15 can't tell the difference unless you look at the second hand.

Are you sure they’ll even want them? This generation do not wear watches anymore. They wear Apple devices or use their phones. Take them on a grand vacation and you will all have memories for a lifetime.

I guess my Seiko Dive Watch is safe, not a status symbol.

After a certain time I think the only “impressions” that are important are the ones that please us. Most of our friends like us just the way we are.

Exactly!

Just like wearing my father in law's watch at my daughter's wedding gave her joy, her engagement ring (which came from one of a pair of diamond earrings, from her great, great grandmother), left to her by her grandmother gives her joy and reminds her of her grandmother, every time she looks at it...

If and when I have grandchildren, I hope they'll learn to play guitar, so I can give them my 50 yo old Martin and my vintage Fenders...
