Former employee and disabled vet: Wounded Warrior Project conduct "makes me sick" - CBS News
I saw a piece on this last night on CBS News with Scott Pelley. I get mail from them once in a while. |

I wonder if Pelley and CBS will balance that with the many exposés on the nation's VA Hospital system "being run like a crime syndicate", and how it has been corrected--or not--two years later.......

While looking for some new charities to support last year Wounded Warriors was at the top of my list because they present themselves as doing such wonderful work. When I looked at the way they allocate the money donated to a good cause I walked away. Their advertising dollars are over the top as well.

with every charity you should first ask for a truthful response to what percentage of donations goes directly to the clients. if less than 95% definitely walk away.

This is interesting, as I have typically relied on the BBB charity review, and they apparently give a different picture.
Charity Report - Wounded Warrior Project - give.org I did not get a chance to watch the CBS special, will try to do this tonight.

I know there are websites where this information is made available to the public. But I don't know what any of those websites are. Please share any links that can help us as donors to "follow the money." Thank you to anyone who can help with this. |

Ever since the United Way scandal in 82, I now donate at the grass roots level. When charities just get too big, there are bigger bills to be paid and also a much bigger temptation for people to try to "enhance their yearly earning potential" at the expense of those who actually needed the funding. Just my way of not paying for private jets and little get-a ways for the con artists.

charitynavigator-dot-org is a site often used to learn about a specific charity.
In the case of Wounded Warrior, they say 34% of their receipts are used for fundraising, 6% for administrative, and 60% for program expenses. |

I read somewhere that their top CEO has an annual salary of $473,000 and only 59 cents out of every dollar collected goes to help veterans.
I proudly support "Combat Veterans to Careers" a local charity. Their office is next to the Hacienda Pro Shop. |

The best website to check out nonprofits is Guidestar.org. You can sign up for a free account which gives access to basic information, including IRS Form 990. I stopped contributing to Wounded Warrior Project several years ago because of the CEOs very high salary and some other unusual financial practices. This organization is based in Jacksonville.

Sadly, there are many alleged "charities" in America today that are more of a business than a charity. Recent reports about Goodwill Industries comes to mind along with the Wounded Warrior Project. Do some research on the administrative expenditures and the salaries of the CEO's of some of our name brand charities and you might be shocked. I still give, but I'm much more cautious and do far more digging into what my gift accomplishes.

Because so much money goes to huge salaries and big parties, plus all the rude phone calls, I only give local. These people volunteer with no personal interest other than helping the locals.
